New Year's Day fly-in 2019

Postby Hagar » Thu Jan 10, 2019 12:14 pm

Some decent weather at last for the New Year's Day fly-in at Popham. 8-)
A smashing day out in the sunshine with a good selection of visiting & home-based aircraft.

It's been a while since I posted anything so here's a few photos.

Good morning Doug.... ;)

Thanks for taking us along again...wonderful shots and certainly looks like a great variety of aeroplanes...

Quick question Doug...

Looked at that Auster three times now...I believe someone at the Bug-smasher Field said that they also put a Radial Engine on the Auster.

Also noticed the Canuck Flag on the Cowl :?:

Never seen a radial engine equipped Auster myself but was wondering if you have seen one on your travels :?:

Could not find anything about an Auster equipped with a Radial Engine on internet...at least not a production run aeroplane...

Cheers...Doug

Thanks for the comments Doug. The Auster in my photo is a Mark V (Auster 5) built in 1944 & powered by a Lycoming O-290-3.
Its current civil registration is G-AKSY - first listed on the UK civil register in 1948, then sold to France as F-BGOO in 1952. Back to the UK in 1991 it's now in its original RAF markings as TJ534.
Here's an early photo in UK civil livery --> http://austerhg.org/gallery3/var/albums/Auster-1243594292/Model_J/G-AKSY%20Mk5%20xTJ534%20%20F-BGOO%20Pic%205.png?m=1338051119

That certainly looks like a Canadian flag on the cowling but I have no further details. I have never seen an Auster with a radial engine.

After some more research I discovered the Canadian connection with Auster V TJ534. It served with 666 Squadron RCAF (formed in March 1945)
which was one of three AOP units manned by Canadian personnel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No._666_Squadron_RCAF

For a brief history of the aircraft type TJ534 in the Search box here --> http://austerhg.org/prod_list/index.php

I'm well thanks Ken. I don't do so much photography nowadays. Good to see you're still around. :)

Thanks Nick. This was a regular "fly-in" event at Popham airfield (EGHP) where private pilots fly in from all over the country. I don't fly the aircraft. I just take the photos.

There are a number of benefits for US manufactured aircraft based in the UK to be FAA registered. http://www.peter2000.co.uk/aviation/faa-nreg/index.html

Some maintenance organisations in the UK hold both CAA & FAA Approval.
