Fly Navy 2016

I went to Old Warden last Sunday for the Fly Navy Day. Wall to wall sunshine & a capacity crowd. It was a tad hazy & the cloudless light blue sky together with the high summer sun made it a challenge to get decent photos. Here's a selection of some of my better attempts.
(If anyone is wondering about the number of images in this post the average file size is 60 Kb & the total file size is just under 1 Mb.)

This opened the show. The magnificent Sea Vixen.

The Seafire III flown by Richard Grace.

One for Ozzy. The BBMF Spitfire LF XVIE.
Image

The RNHF contingent, Chipmunk, Swordfish & Harvard.

Morane Saulnier MS 317 representing the AƩronavale (French Naval Air Arm.)
Image

Bristol Scout replica. First time I've seen it in the air.
Image

The resident Sopwith Pup. Unfortunately repairs to the Sopwith Triplane are not finished following a mishap last year.
Image

The Duxford contingent. This was a little preview for the Flying Legends show next month.
Two beautifully restored Hawker Nimrods, led by the Shuttleworth Sea Hurricane in the first shot.

The TFC Nimrod I

& HAC Nimrod II.

And finally, the Fighter Collection big three
Image

Grumman Wildcat FM2, known as the Martlet in the Fleet Air Arm.

Goodyear FG-1D Corsair

Grumman F8F Bearcat

Excellent! This was my first visit to Old Warden this year & the best air display I've seen for some time.

Watching your wondefull shots, I notice that when they clipped wings on the Spitfire :character-jaws: they clipped it's beauty as well (I know, efficiency was the culprit :snooty: ).

Ahhh, yes the BBMF's XVI! Very impressive though and can give quite an aggressive display at the right venue! The Collection's Spitfire Vc should fly again within the next 18 months, complete with it's nicely clipped wings!

A wonderful show full of variety IMHO Doug - I did think a couple of the formations made the show a little laboured in places (Avro XIX & Dragon Rapide took far too long for just two passes and added little - far better as singletons; and the combination of G-EBLV and the Morane just didn't work at all - all we got to see was the Morane struggling to stay behind the Moth!).

The rest were good though, particularly the Vixen. A nice compact, noisy, display. ^-^ Sorry I missed you. I was tied to the car with the kids!

I'm with Jean on the Spitfire. It might perform better in certain roles but just doesn't look right without those classic elliptical wing-tips.

Otherwise I agree with you on the show. The first air display I've attended since the tragic events at Shoreham last year. It was a most enjoyable day. I hope to see you at a future show.

These were taken with my trusty Canon 60D with 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM lens + 1.4x Extender.
