I couldn't tell if it was a B-1RD or a GU-11.

Beautiful yard Paul, you have your own personal little kingdom to escape to. We're in the final stages of buying another house (I really don't know what got into me on this one, must be oxygen deprivation) and I'm debating what to do with the back yard.
Here's a picture of it. Looks pretty barren doesn't it? Any suggestions?

First thing...get rid of that bloody Xmas tree(s)..or it will take over your life in a few years time...trust me!!
Plant small, flowering shrubs...easier to keep trim.
NO LARGE TREES...NO TREES...NO TREES!
Looks like you have lots of stones on the ground to get rid of, before you can start mowing?
Plant grass...or Turf.
Our English homes always have boundaries around our gardens, front and back; fences, walls, hedges, etc....to keep the neighbours, animals, vermin, double-glazing-salesmen, etc, out!
Our homes are our castles...minus the drawbridge...(optional extra)!
We also have front gates...(which must always be kept closed).

Like our countryside...we Brits thrive on boundaries all around our property!

We encourage lots of birds into our gardens....

Garden Sparrows, Starlings, Blackbirds, Magpies, Crows, Pigeons, Robins, Wrens, Finches, ...Beach Babes....etc..etc... ...!

Bird seed, food, etc, dispersed carefully to prevent vermin:...Rats, Mice, etc.

Its lovely to hear the bird song in the early mornings and late evenings!
(...and the plaintiff cries of; "more!", from the Beach Babes...)..... ...!

Nice wegelia Paul. The playground reminds me of the night/early morning some drunk knocked on my door asking for a push. I said a definite no, but my dear wife, bless her, reminded me of the countless times someone had helped me out. Therefore I reluctantly dressed and bleary eyed blundered out into the yard looking for the said drunk. I called out asking where he was. Said he, giggling, "over here on the swing."

When the Children were small, we always had a swing in our garden.

They love a swing....

..and grown-ups do, as well!

My eldest Daughter is coming up 60 years of age now, and she still remembers her garden swing with great affection.

A garden without a swing, is like a house without a Toilet!.... ...!

Hi Paul!
Sorry it took me so long to respond but we had one of those "crisis situations" teenagers are so famous for. Anyway....thanks for the gardening tips. I'm not a real fan of evergreens but at least you don't have to rake up the fallen leaves every fall. The picture I put up is one out of the real estate listing for the property and unfortunately it doesn't show the 35 foot tall green something or other just to the right of the picture but it's definitely a bird haven so I guess it will stay for now. Birds are nice to have around but in this area we have Swallows. The House Swallows, as folks here call them, are fine and they will inhabit any birdhouse you build for them but the Barn Swallows are very territorial and once they build a nest they will attack you if you're within 50 feet of it. They don't inhabit any birdhouses rather they will build a mud and straw nest on some projection or ledge or downspout of your home or other building. They're a real pain in the asp and they will come back each year to built another nest in the same exact spot.
One idea I have is to plant some lilac bushes along the back property line. The house faces East and we have a prevailing West wind so the scent of the lilacs will drift towards the house. That wooden framed mini garden I thought I'd let the daughter transform into a Fairy Garden with all the miniature items. It even has a water spigot next to it. I'm not much of a gardener so I'm definitely looking at low maintenance flowers or shrubs.
I really like the English or perhaps I should say the European idea of front and back yards. Small, neat & trim and colorful.
