The Power of the Sea

I took these photos last Tuesday while on a walk along the undercliff path from Rottingdean to Brighton Marina. It was a nice morning with light wind & a relatively calm sea. I never expected to see anything like this. A most impressive spectacle & demonstration of the power of the sea. I was lucky not to get drenched. Made me wonder what it must have been like during the recent heavy storms.

Good morning Doug... :D

Wonderful shots.

I went through all those pictures and they reminded me of some fine words:

THEY THAT GO DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS,

that do business in great waters;

These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep.

For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth up the waves thereof.

They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble.

They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end.

Then they cry unto the LORD in their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses.

He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still.

Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

Psalms, 107:23-3

Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors

— African proverb

******************

One ship drives east and another drives west

With the selfsame winds that blow.

'Tis the set of the sails

And not the gales

Which tells us the way to go.

Like the winds of the sea are the ways of fate

As we voyage along through life.

'Tis the set of a soul that decides its goal,

And not the calm or the strife.

— Ella Wheeler Wilcox, 'Winds of Fate'

No matter how important a man at sea may consider himself,

unless he is fundamentally worthy the sea will some day find him out.

Felix Riesenberg

A pilot's business is with the wind, and with the stars, with night, with sand, with the sea.

He strives to outwit the forces of nature.

He stares with expectancy for the coming of the dawn the way a gardener awaits the coming of spring.

He looks forward to port as a promised land,

and truth for him is what lives in the stars.

Antoine de Saint Exupéry,

'Wind, Sand, and Stars,' 1939

Doug we have quite a few relatives who were Old Salts long before the Steam Engine for ships and the aeroplane was invented.
Some sailed out of Bristol and I use the term Shipshape and Bristol Fashion regularly.

Many aviators that I flew with and have retired have their own sail boat. The Old Girl and I love sailing also and some of those pictures remind me of the weekends spent docked on Georgian Bay. Waves...they can be awesomely frightful at times...

I often thought of going south to do some sailing, but my luck our boat would be fifty feet long and the shark sixty-five feet long...

Again great shots...

SOME pictures, Hagar!!!

@Trucker. These words

>>No matter how important a man at sea may consider himself,

Felix Riesenberg<<

gave me the gooseflesh.

Those words do not only apply to sailors, but to ALL of us!!

Thanks for the great photos! All these great sayings remind me of one I read a long time ago.

"there are three types of men; Those who are alive, those who are dead, and those who are at sea."

It wasn't until after my first time at sea that I really understood and appreciated this saying.

"The Sea calls to me lovingly as a mistress would her lover.
She reminds me of voyages past and journeys yet to be.
She beckons with horizons undiscovered, sunsets still unseen.
Her song is like a sirens, so seductive and so tempting.
I long to be with her, to smell her sweet fragrance.
To feel the wind and taste the spray.
She calls to me and I cannot resist.
She is the Sea and I love her dearly."

Thanks for all the comments. I'm delighted that a few of my photos inspired some classic quotes. I've lived by the sea all my life, that's over 70 years, & I'm still amazed by its beauty & power.

Thanks Steve. Yes, it's sand. What did you think it was? You can see pebbles being thrown up in some of my other photos. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--ILP8bQ1H5o/UxjE1Dk0dpI/AAAAAAAAKms/M2Ojwbfi5SU/s1024/da_MG_0063.jpg

Thank you. 8) It's actually not as dangerous as it appears. Apart from some fine spray we hardly got wet. It might have been different in a strong onshore wind.
The sea wall along here was designed to throw most of the breakers back out to sea. That's what creates the phenomenon of the huge wave crests further out which only happens along this stretch of the coastline. Of course, I wouldn't be stupid enough to venture down there during a storm.

I grew up in Polperro and then later before I joined the RAF in Looe where my parents still live today. What saddens me are those people who take there surroundings for granted. Living in such a beautiful place where the Atlantic ocean was my back garden I always swore I would never become one of those people. I think I managed this. I could go up on the cliffs sit and just watch the sea. The colour of it was not the same from minute to minute. I miss it so much. Right now and for the distant future home is the North German Plain, getting to the coast is a holiday or real treat......

Truly awesome shots! And you say this was a calm day? Impressive! Very very impressive.

The last one is absolutely fantastic! A wall of water!

The folks along the walkway look like they need to harness up and hook on to the rail. WOW!
