Really on a role. The welding has been completed and the underside is now protected AND, refitted the first part back on one , the petrol tank. There is now light at the end of the tunnel, all be it a pin prick............Only a another 1000 or so parts to go ..........

That looks a great project! I completely restored a Mercedes G Wagen a few years ago and one of the biggest challenges was protecting the INSIDE of welds. I gently heated the whole area up and sprayed in a fine heavy mist of waxoil and turned the metal around until it has soaked in everywhere inside. I finally sold it to a Japanese guy who took it with him to Japan. I'd love to see it now to see if my work has held up (& take some running shoes just in case ... )

I love restoring and working on classic cars. Have you posted other shots on this?

Hi Pete,

I have been posting the odd set of pictures since last September. The car is an MBG Roadster from 1977. I drove her into my garage, but it will be a while before I drive her out again. These seven day turn arounds you see on the discovery channel car shows, well, money and a distinct lack of time..... As for the sills, I will be spraying wax oil in through the drainage holes once she is back on all fours. However, I am no so concerned about that as she will never ever be driven in the wet again. A single drop of rain and she will stay in the garage. A very good mate tells me that has been the way he has kept his spitfire rust free for the last 1/4 century........In fact, English cars from the 60's, 70's and 80's should come with a large warning label on the dash.......DO NOT USE IN THE WET.............

The thing I really loved about my re-build of my 1932 1088cc Brooklands Riley Nine, Grand Prix, open 1-1/2 seater racing car, (British Racing Green) was its complete "girder chassis", (complete rolling chassis!), and its bolt-on aluminum body...no corrosion or rust!

It was my only daily transport for many years...lots of fun..and getting wet!

The MGB is a monocoque so there is no chassis. It has the advantage of there being less car to work on, but unlike the Spitfire, where you can remove the body from the chassis rails, any rust becomes a structural problem. Also, when putting it all back together, your are ferreting around under the car from day one. The Spitfire you can build the chassis, running gear, engine etc up and then put the body on.

I remember having to patch all the rust holes on the Camaro, and man that took a ton of work. But it all finished up in the end. She's coming along very nice! What are you doing for the engine? are you doing a rebuild or buying a new one? I had a 350 Big Block, rebuilding it and fitted it with some newer stuff.
