Old Aerial Photos UK

Postby G.K. » Tue Jun 26, 2012 3:51 am

Not quite sure where to put this link, I guess here will do.

This is a new website that has published hundreds of old aerial shots of the UK.

Extract from their info:

The Aerofilms Collection was acquired for the nation in 2007 when the company was facing financial difficulties. With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Foyle Foundation, English Heritage and the Royal Commissions in Scotland and Wales embarked on a programme to conserve, catalogue and digitise the collection and make it freely available online.

The number of images available to view on the website will continue to grow, and by 2014, some 95,000 images taken between 1919 and 1953 will be visible online.

Loads of aircraft shots in the "On the Ground" section.

Good to see it's running a bit quicker today! Yesterday it was a bit busy seeing as it was all over the press! :)

Glad you enjoyed it Trucker :)

C....yes, the website was bogged down for a while.

Some great shots of my home town (and my house in the distance).....worth a revisit when all of their pics are uploaded.

here's a link to the aircraft section:

What a spectacular website! Thanks so much for posting this link, there's hours and hours of time to be happily whiled away perusing all of this! :D

And yes, I agree on the whole floats thing. I also think the aircraft code on the tail may be roughly spelling the noise the pilot made when he ditched... ;D

My pleasure.

The Southwark Park lake is still there, perhaps it should be called a pond as it's not very big. Perhaps the pilot was aiming for the adjacent lawn, who knows? The story behind the picture has probably been forgotten.
