I dont' suppose I'll ever get a pilots ticket, I spend too much time doing this. There are some similarities though, wings or sails, foils, air and wind.

My Wife and I are keen racers although I was on the Committee Boat for this event which was the Laser Master nationals/world qualifier held at Pevensey Bay. Sailors generally love to have a pic of themselves at these events to take home, so I do the honours.

The nearest I ever got to that, was fixing a square-rigged sail in my home-built Canadian Canoe...
...but getting wet (and cold) in sailing and wind surfing, etc, has always put me off the sport!... ...!

Sadly no. One of those things I never got around to.

I would say it's more like gliding.

A square rigged canoe would suit me fine so long as I don't have to paddle

Cold and wet does put some off, I wear a drysuit and this keeps me warm right up to December in the English Channel, that time of year the water is warmer than the air

Yes, gliding would be the most similar, you wouldn't believe how finely attuned the top sailors are to the wind, gaining lift from the smallest gusts, gaining speed from the smallest waves.

Masses of control on the sail shape, depth, twist and angle of attack, center of effort, center of drag (on hull).....truly a black art.

i have been on the water alot with my dad on his fishing boat but the problem is that it has to be in the weekend,when the weather is decent(rarely),when there isn't too much wind(rarely),when the tide is right,(again rarely) and we must have room in the freezer for the cod,ling and the occasional gurnard. XD
and if the season is right there will be some mackeral in there aswell but since they everywhere we don't take too much.

We have always been inland sailors and had several great boats.

One of our grandsons just bought himself a sleek Shark, not bad for a fifteen year old who spent part of his summer at Air Cadet Camp Gliding and the rest of the summer helping to fill barns with hay bales to get the money for his Shark.

Hot Air Ballooning and Gliding are right up there with Sailing and as I think back, many of the pilots that retired around the same time I did owned both, a sailboat and a bugsmashing amphibian like the Cessna 180/185, Republic Seabee, Lake Renegade...etc...

Sailing on the Great Lakes is just awesome, however one needs the time to do it.
I can remember our son driving ninety minutes to bring us something the old girl forgot... ... but the trip took us eight hours by sailboat.

The Great Lakes looks like one of those "Must Sail" locations, bit Like Lago di Garda or the Greek Islands....I couldn't imagine not having a boat to cruise if I lived there.......I don't generally cruise, more of a racer although we do have an old Enterprise dinghy for taking the grandkids for cruises on Chichester Harbour every now and then, the boats big enough to stow a picnic and can be pulled up remote beaches.

I checked out the Shark, nice boat, not common in the UK but popular in Europe, a good Lake boat.... Your Grandson should have fun in that.

I am not sure if they make the Shark here anymore as his is several years old but he had his dad look at it and they say it is in good shape.

Will sleep three or four with kit and makes for a good weekend sailor...
