I have no idea what the plane is.......I'll guess that the "it" is a seat-belt airbag?

Yes, you are quite right, it is a passenger seat belt airbag. Up until today I had never seen one, let alone knew about them. I noticed it when doing a pre-flight for a customer aircraft. This one is fitted to a CRJ700 on the first row of the right hand side. It is due to the bulkhead being rather close by. Armed by closing it and set of by the G of your hips moving forward. The captain was not to sure what would set it off, a heavy landing, a very heavy landing or a crash landing. Though he did wonder on how useful it would be if the aircraft flew into a hillside at 400kts :-/ We did come to the conclusion that if that was to happen, one plus point, your coffin could be viewed open from the neck up :-X
It was very light, though as you can see, not so compact, but how long before they are installed in the back side of all the head rests as a standard fit........... :-?

I've seen them on GA aircraft before, such as the Cirrus, but never on an airline aircraft.  I'll have to keep that in the memory bank when training my guys.  At least airplane seat bags are far less hazardous than car airbags.  Car airbags deploy by an explosive charge.  Aircraft are usually just filled by a compressed charge, such as CO2.
