Is this a good camera?  I'm thinking about buying it.  I don't know if you can adjust shutter speed though.

I think the first thing to ask is 'what do you plan to use it for'. Different cameras suit different needs.

I would imagine you can change the shutter speed, there's an 'M' on the control dial, which usually means manual, so you should be able to set all the controls. A and S may mean Aperture/Shutter priority respectively. Shutter priority will let you set the shutter speed.

I want to get it for taking pictures of planes, macro shots, and the fact it has a HD video function.  I figured that the M was manual, but I'm not sure if I can adjust the speed because my current camera has a manual, but I can only control the ISO setting.

As Machineman9 has said above, its got the Manual,Aperture & Shutter priority features which are a must nowadays..

For the price your getting an ideal Bridge camera which has 95% of the features of a DSLR, with a Ideal zoom capability ideal for airshows etc and if i remember correctly its 28mm at standard without any zoom so is not bad for some wide angle shots.

For the price you could get a second hand 400D (what I use), 450D or 20D and a cheap zoom lens. I'd much rather go for the SLR....more to learn but can get better results and easily upgradeable....

Sony's are good, but I would personally go with Nikon, I really like their D series.  ;)
