Hi Matt... :)

Great shots...thanks... ;)

The de-ice trucks here are mostly operated by one individual from inside an enclosed station at the end of the boom.
The unit can also disperse hot air along with de-icing fluid.  The hot air clears snow/ice from the fuselage, wings etc.

There are still a few de-ice trucks around that have a crew of two, driver and de-icer but we see more one person operated units now.
The de-ice pad is also more common which operates much like a very large car wash and does not require a second truck/unit to suck up the de-ice fluid.
It is not uncommon to see both types in use at military or civilian airports here.

I remember the old days when we just parked the bird in the sun and sent the crewman out with a broom.   ;D

Thanks again for the pictures.   ;)

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

What happens to all the toxic de-icing fluid?

...down the drain?

Quote:
"The toxicity of deicing fluids is an environmental concern, and research is underway to find less toxic alternatives. For example, the US Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) is currently studying a chemical known as METSS ADF-2. Other strategies can be used to minimize the environmental impact such as collecting used fluid and using the maximum dilution consistent with safety. In 2009 the first use of a biological-based deice fluid was announced. Flybe, Europe's largest regional airline announced that it would be using a Kilfrost product containing 1,3-propanediol, a fermentation product of corn.[2]"
End quote.

Expensive stuff..to throw away?

Paul.... :)...!

De-icing, professional style! :)

Doug, I've come across the enclosed units in Canada (Halifax I think, almost exactly ;) about a year ago as it happens). Very swish, and a bit warmer too I suspect! :)

Paul: I suspect that's a question you only ask if you are involved in someone's little healthandenvironmentalsafetyandprotection empire! ;D

Good call. Very poor indeed. :) Remedial English for me!

Good morning all... :)

Here the de-icing fluid is recycled depending on the concentration percentage.
