Killed the beemer.

Yesterday heading north with my dad to pick up my lad. Dad had just taken over driving when the front offside tyre blew out at 75mph. Sadly this started the car fishtailing & it ended up catching the central reservation before heading backwards into the opposite barrier at the side of the road.

Would've happened whoever was driving & the outcome would probably have been the same. On the plus side nobody was injured & I think just dad's pride has been damaged.

Bad points:

*I think the car is a write off.

Good points:

*We both got out without any injuries.

*Nobody else was involved.

*My son wasn't in the car at the time.

*We got stopped by the barrier at the side of the road - that barrier finished a mile up the road & leaves just a 5ft ditch & a load of trees.

*I've always insured my dad as fully comp on my cars.

*I was just about to spend about

Gad you are all OK. I take it that it is a financial write off as opposed to a mechanical one. They are always the ones that hurt the most :'(

So, is 75mph the normal speed limit on that hwy ? I ask because here on the island, we have a higher than normal speed limit set at 110 kph(just under 70mph). Most of the country here is set to 100kph (around 60-62.5mph) Good that there were no injuries. Now you can go for Corvette Z06..... :D

No it's 70mph. TSC's speedo is not calbrated correctly.. When I met up with him in the summer of 2008 we had a bit of a drag race and his speedo was quite clearly showing his speed was 5mph over my true, calibrated speed of 70mph even though we were side by side at the same speed.

;)

I think it'll be a financial write off Matt. But it's a bit easier on me as I hadn't yet paid out to have it all serviced which it was due. Also I had been thinking of selling it as it was a bit much running two cars - I just kept hanging on to it because it was so good at eating up the miles. Still a shame though, despite it's age it was a fantastic car.

LOL Ken, stop putting Z06 thoughts into my head.

70mph is the limit for the motorways, I reckon we were doing an indicated 75, which would be about 70 realistically.

Looks repairable as long as the frame is still straight

Write off is used to declare when the cost of repair is greater than the cost of the car itself. So probably repairable, but the insurance company isn't likely to pay for it.

I'd agree with the Corvette idea and I am glad you are alright!

I was on the Autobahn yesterday, cruising at 120 mph. This puts things into perspective. A blowout at that sort of speed does not bear thinking about :o

That's a good entry speed for a loop in a Cessna 140

And to keep this all in perspective, the Z06 is barely huffin' and puffin' at 120mph..............We all know you want it...... :D

I have been known to wind my 525 up to 140 mph from time to time, but only when I am on my own. I have had a short blat at 165 mph when I took a mates Subaru Legacy B4 up the Autobahn when he visited a few years ago. We where both a little surprised at how slow it got to it's top speed. It was only afterwards that we noticed that both front tyres were more than several psi under pressure.........both at about half what they should have been. Now that brings things into perspective ;D
