I think your main problems with a photo competition would be in getting people to enter & judge it. I'm not sure what criteria are used in the screenshot comps but art is a very difficult thing to judge. I could be wrong but don't think many of the regular contributors to this forum would be interested.

I think it's a noble idea, but I think it'd take some of the fun out of it. When we get a chance we share pictures we're proud of or others would find interesting. I'm not sure I fancy the pressure of competition  ;)

I can picture it happening, it might be nice. How would you keep it fair as some of us cannot run out and buy the finest cameras and lenses with tripod and all.  :)

I like the idea of the skill.  Practice for the good and classes for the need improvement.

It may not seem fair, but there is no kind of separation of high or low end computers in the Screenies of the Month Contests.

Hmmm, I never thought about that...

Not sure if it matters though,  I've got anything but a high end computer, and I've won best of the month comps with FS9 shots, against shots taken with FSX on i7 systems and quad core Intels, and all that. :P

A skilled photographer could take 1000 shots with top of the line equipment, and could easily bore me to death with them if I'm not interested in the subject... or a beginner with a throw away instant camera could take a poor shot of something I love in a unique way, and I might think it's the greatest pic in the world.

So with art/pics/screenshots... it's not always about quality and skill (unless that's all you consider important), it's about mood, moment, composition, & content.

That's why I look right past jaggies and bad compression in screenshots.  Sometimes the content of the pic more than makes up for it.

Imagine what would happen to the StudioV's 'best of' comps if we broke it down by computer specs. :o

I would still like to hear what regular posters here think about the idea. So far only a few have said anything.

I might participate in a photo contest as long as we aren't required to severely compress our pictures. Could we upload our pictures without worrying about file size?

A bit of skill also comes into play there too. Images need to comply with forum rules, so, they would have to be compressed. It's the same with screenshot competitions.

For those unaware, there's also a thread here:

As I said in the linked thread, I think that it would be worth a shot at least once to gauge actual interest.

I think themed subjects might work too. Not so much a competition but get everyone to take a photo of a certain theme and then help criticise and comment on them so that they can improve maybe?

Does anyone want to try this out for the remainder of the month?
