Let's see how good your aircraft recognition is. I took these at Popham yesterday. They're all very rare types in this country.

Thanks for trying. :)

I'll give the answers after a few more people have had a go.

PS. #2 is a bit of a trick question.

Looks like a Stinson logo on the vertical tail of 4 but can't imagine why  :).

Thanks for the interest. I think this might be too difficult as I wouldn't have got them right myself. Here's a few clues. Not sure if they will help.

When I said 'very rare' they are the only examples of their type in Britain.

#1 is not a Stearman. It was built in 1929 & recently imported. This was its second appearance at an event in this country.

#2 is not what it appears. It's British & not a true vintage type. RAFLeigh is almost correct.

#3 is French & this one was built in 1952. The designer originated from Russia.

#4 is an obscure US type. It was built in 1939. Not a Bellanca, Piper or Stinson.

#5 is another obscure US type built in 1939.

#1 is a Travelair...I think.
#2: it sure looks like a Taylorcraft... but a more modern engine and Piper cowl.
#3: ??
#4:Porterfield Collegiate
#5: Some sort of WACO?

Thanks to everyone who took part. I now think this was far too difficult. rottydaddy gets 4 points for two correct answers. RAFLeigh has 2 points & I'll give olderndirt a bonus point as the Auster was developed from the Taylorcraft. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taylorcraft_Auster

Here's the answers.

#1. NC8115 is a Travel Air D-4000. This one is powered by a 220-hp Wright J-5 Whirlwind & fitted with the "Speed Wing" for racing. The pilot told me it's very fast for a biplane. He also said he's been after one for the last 30 years. There is currently one more airworthy Travel Air in the UK. That is the 12Q last heard of at Biggin Hill. http://www.pilotfriend.com/photo_albums/timeline/between/Travel%20Air%204000.htm

#2. G-CDGP is registered as a Crofton Auster J1-A. It's basically a brand new aeroplane which first flew in August this year. It was built by aircraft restorer Paul Groves from component parts from different Auster models with a Lycoming engine up front. There is one more Crofton Auster J1-A on the CAA register but this is more conventional & powered by a Cirrus Minor. http://www.caa.co.uk/applicationmodules/ginfo/ginfo_photo.aspx?regmark=G-BVGT&imgname=G-BVGT001&imgtype=jpg

#3. G-BYKS registered as a Leopoldoff L6 Colibri. More info here http://shortfinals.wordpress.com/2009/03/16/leopoldoff-colibri-romantic-obscure-and-very-french-or-is-that-russian/ There appears to be a discrepancy with the model number.

#4. G-BVGT is a Porterfield CP50 Collegiate. There is one more Porterfield on the CAA register. This is a CP65. http://aerofiles.com/_porter.html

#5.

Sorry I saw this one too late, but I will admit to being stumped by all but the Rearwin........I've seen too many models of this one, but the rest.........?
.....thanks for the look, Doug. 20% is a poor score for me !
