Let's see how good your aircraft recognition is. I took these at Popham yesterday. They're all very rare types in this country.

I'll give the answers after a few more people have had a go.

PS. #2 is a bit of a trick question.

2. L-4
3. some kind of Standard Biplane
4. bellanca maybe

Not a clue about 1,3 and 4 but 2 looks like a Taylorcraft and is 5 a Howard DGA?

Looks like a Stinson logo on the vertical tail of 4 but can't imagine why  .

Thanks for the interest. I think this might be too difficult as I wouldn't have got them right myself. Here's a few clues. Not sure if they will help.

When I said 'very rare' they are the only examples of their type in Britain.

#1 is not a Stearman. It was built in 1929 & recently imported. This was its second appearance at an event in this country.

#2 is not what it appears. It's British & not a true vintage type. RAFLeigh is almost correct.

#3 is French & this one was built in 1952. The designer originated from Russia.

#4 is an obscure US type. It was built in 1939. Not a Bellanca, Piper or Stinson.

#5 is another obscure US type built in 1939.

#1 is a Travelair...I think.
#2: it sure looks like a Taylorcraft... but a more modern engine and Piper cowl.

Here's the answers.

#1. NC8115 is a Travel Air D-4000. This one is powered by a 220-hp Wright J-5 Whirlwind & fitted with the "Speed Wing" for racing. The pilot told me it's very fast for a biplane. He also said he's been after one for the last 30 years. There is currently one more airworthy Travel Air in the UK. #2. G-CDGP is registered as a Crofton Auster J1-A. It's basically a brand new aeroplane which first flew in August this year. It was built by aircraft restorer Paul Groves from component parts from different Auster models with a Lycoming engine up front. Sorry I saw this one too late, but I will admit to being stumped by all but the Rearwin........I've seen too many models of this one, but the rest.........?
