No gliding today (pt 1 of 3)

One of those bad news/good news days... I was hoping to rack up another solo flight or two today- great weather! But quite windy when we got set up... H. didn't want me flying solo in such a gusty x-wind, and the only other towplane pilot available besides him was not too comfy flying tows under the same conditions. So no chance for me to even log some dual with H.
Soo... I decided to sit and wait, let others go, until things maybe calmed down. Not exactly a lousy way to spend some time, but it was disappointing.
But fortunately today turned out to be the day I got my Bird Dog ride! Banner tow pilot J. arrived mid-afternoon, while 94H was staged by the runway... and I had my camera, and the battery was charged...

Trivia question: what is this, and why on Earth would a banner-tow pilot keep one in the airplane?

I'm pretty sure its one of those extended branch cutting things.  Why?  IDK incase the banner got caught on something.
