My method is to set the camera up for a 10 second exposure and repeat until you get some lightning during a shot....

If you can figure out how to do that on a Canon powershot SD1100 IS than I will do it that way!

Why regular digital cameras have an exposure setting!
Bursting photos is probably your best bet without getting an SLR, Skoker :-/

According to the Canon website your camera can have up to 15 seconds exposure time, which is about standard for P&S cameras.
