It looks like the aurora borealis, no don't laugh. In exceptional circumstances they can be seen way south. What you have pictured looks just like the sky did here in Germany seven years ago. For two or three nights our sky was that colour. It was such a rare event, it was the news for a day or so.

Yeah I remember that, must have been Januar or so! And it was caused by Sahara-sands been blown over the alps! I'll have a look if I can find some pics...

Red skies are usually caused by sand or dust in the atmosphere, I would rule out Aurora immediately.    During my tour in Iraq we had the blaze orange/blood red sky nightly due to all the sand and dust in the sky, I would say a cloud of dirt flew over your part of the world and presented you with a gorgeous sunset  :)

thank you for the comments....these were taken here in Northern illinois so i dont think that it would have been sand. we did however just had a thunderstorm come through.

Its amazing all the "stuff" which can contaminate the Air at any time, and create unusual lighting, etc, effects...

Dust, Smoke, Volcanic Ash, Rain, Mist, Fog, etc...

Which is why I always set my visibility down to "sensible" levels in the Flight Simulator, generally down to 5 miles at the most...on a good day!

There are some fantastic sights to be seen, looking skywards... :)...!

Paul...always fascinated by the "Weather"... 8-)...!

Oh yeah, see that occasionally when a storm passes by in the late afternoon...

Just from the sunset hitting the clouds, it can look pretty amazing. 8-)

Just saw in the news that the Russian volcano, Sarychev, was erupting and the ash spreading across the globe was creating awesome purple skies just after the sun set, lasting only a few moments...could be your case here
