After a 13 hour shift yesterday caused by an engine change, I found a bit of "Me" time in my coffee break today. I managed to catch some smoke. The Air Bus, is not three different aircraft ;D

Nice. Touchdown shots are cool. The Airbus looked like it had a bit of a rough landing. Not quite level on the touchdown. Just making sure the passengers are awake to get off.

Great shots!!

Boy, they seem to be coming in pretty hard!!  I can't get smoke shots like that at PHL!!  They seem to bring them in nice and easy there!!

Funny you should mention this, because I happened to ask a couple of crews recently about the amount of smoke produced. I say a couple because I was a little skeptical about the answer from the first crew. I thought it was linked to landing weight, but the answer is a little surprising. The harder the landing the less smoke that is produced and the softer the more. The reason is wheel run up. A harder landing will produce less smoke because the wheel speed run up is fairly instant (relatively speaking). A soft landing, the wheel speed run up to aircraft speed is longer. The wheel is in skid longer before the gear takes the full aircraft wieght thus transferring the aircraft speed into rotation of the wheels. Logical when you think about, and I have been doing this job for just short of 22 years and I have only just given it said thought. So all I can say is, they must nail them down in PHL ;D

Matt

I never looked at it that way, I always assumed the more smoke the harder the landing, just a typical observation i guess, but your info puts it into a whole new perspective!

Very interesting Matt, but am I correct in saying smoke is also produced by the brakes being engaged, so if the pilot is a little edgy and hits the brakes on landing then you'll get a lovely puff of smoke :P

That's interesting!!  I would have thought it was the other way!!  I guess they are coming into PHL hard.  I was on a U S Airways 757 that came in so hard I thought the landing gear was going to come up through the aircraft!! :D
