Oshkosh '08: 35mm scans

I lugged the ol' Canon FT along to Airventure this time, having just gotten a proper 200mm lens for it (for a song on eBay).

I brought just a few rolls to the previously-reliable CVS near me, and they basically destroyed the negatives.  :o

Fortunately, most of the shots were overexposed crap anyway (light meter in this camera is dubious and I'm still learning, especially with the new lens).  ::)

These first few are not the best images, but the best overall in terms of damage...

I then brought a few more rolls to a better lab, where they made the best of the overexposed stock... without *cough* destroying the negatives...

All in all, a rather expensive way to get a few interesting snaps. ::)
But there's potential- I want to get a decent negative scanner, which should help. And if I start shooting smarter and noting my settings, I might get more for my money's worth.

Wow, there are a few excellent shots - keep it going! Love the mood of the Spartan Executive.  :D

Shame. Now I know why I went digital. If anything goes wrong (which it often does) there's only me to blame. With the price of film & processing these days it probably works out cheaper in the long run.

Too much messing about for me. I admire your persistence & look forward to seeing the results.

What lens did you get Rotty? If it's usable on digital cams, you might wanna consider a digital canon body ( 350 - 400 - 450D, new or second hand depending on your budget), instead of buying a scanner.

To be brutally honest, the colours don't look right to me. It's just like those old seventies photo's. The last four are nice and sharp, so tweeking them in photoshop would be over in a second. But if you like this retro-look, you can also achieve this through photoshop. In the end it'll save you lots of money, as Hagar stated before...

Just my 2 cents!

Kris, I was thinking the same thing about the 70's look. I was thinking about pulling out my old Canon AE-1 to see what kinds of shots I could come up with.

I really like the subjects in you're shots Sean, especially the Bonanza!!!

Though I don't shoot Nikon, that's one of the great things about their F-Mount design, the extensive backward/forward compatibility with much older lenses and designs.

Try black and white to work on exposure.  Theres some good stuff out there, try Kodak 100 for airshows.  I also admire your willingness to work with film.  If you learn to process them yourself its a blast!

I just googled the camera and it seems to be a sixties model!  :o

That would make the 200 mm lens useless on the newer bodies, so forgive me my earlier comment.  ;)

Not only useless on the new ones, but useless on most cameras of the period (the FT was not the most common type).
I've looked at adaptors, but, for the money... eh.

The good news: I forgot there are a few more shots that came out much better (better exposures); forgot to scan them. I'll post those later, along with the one really good shot that was totally ruined by some idiot who didn't know how to load the machine. ::)

Well, for what it's worth, I quite like them.. Not perfect, obviously, but the "retro" feel reminds me of countless airshow trips with my Dad and the 70s look is rather good IMO.
