Airbourne 08 preview

Postby Hagar » Thu Aug 14, 2008 3:14 pm

Today was the first day of the Airbourne 4-day seafront air show at Eastbourne. (No, I haven't spelt it wrong. Airbourne= Air Show Eastbourne.)

As usual some of the display aircraft are based at nearby Shoreham for the duration of the event. Here's a sample of what I hope to see in the next few days. The weather was very changeable but at least the wind dropped. I got soaked through a couple of times but it improved as the day went on. Enough of my rambling, here's the pics.

The Grob Tutor returning after his show.

Here's the Blades display team arriving in their new livery.

One of Charlie's Tincans.

Plane Sailing's Catalina returning after its display. (I know it's really a Canso.)

I rather like this one.
Image

One of the local Harvards. Not part of the show but I don't often see this one in the air.

Nice surprise. I wasn't expecting these until tomorrow. The BBMF Spitfire & Hurricane turned up. Bit of luck I happened to be in the right place this time.
MK356 Spitfire LFIXe. First time I've seen the new silver paint job.

Hurricane MkIIc PZ865. The last Hurricane ever built.

Press day tomorrow. Looks like a busy day providing the weather cooperates. Fingers crossed. ;)

Hurricane MkIIc PZ865. The last Hurricane ever built.

Hopefully one day they'll put it back in its lovely plain camoflage "Last of the Many" scheme, last seen in the mid 80s, with its shade of bluey-grey.

These turned out great, love the lighting and the variety, and they're all very crisp!!

What do you mean by "I know it's really a Canso?"

Is that PBY not a real PBY?

Thanks for all the comments. Probably some of the best photos I've taken all season. Hope to get more today.

Ah, I knew it looked familiar. You are a very lucky chap. ;)

It's actually a PBY-5A built in Canada by Canadian Vickers. These were known as the Canso. I have to be so careful with descriptions these days with people like Charlie watching my every move. ::) :D

Two thumbs up Doug! Perfect shots. The Catalina against those clouds just tops it of!

Catalinas and Cansos are a step too far in the pedantry stakes - a bit like Blenheims and Bolingbrokes (there's only one Blenheim in the whole world, yet you heardly here them being called Bolingbrokes). ;) ;D

Some superb shots there Doug. I love the landing Spit, I keep trying to get a Spit landing shot like that but never seem to quite make it.

Funny you should mention that... a landing Spit is far easier than getting them in the air, travelling at full speed... I still have to make my first crystalclear image of one in that condition! But seeing other people's shots, I understand that isn't really easy.  :)
