Summer is here at last

Postby Hagar » Mon Jul 28, 2008 2:10 pm

Don't blink or you'll miss it. Typically this was the only weekend in the season with no air shows or fly-ins within reach. ::)

Never mind. I had a lovely time at the local airport. Lots of activity after a quiet start. Then a wonderful surprise. I was lucky enough to achieve another ambition. A flight in a Piper Cub. Conditions couldn't have been better for a nice trip over what I think is some of the prettiest countryside in the UK. These were taken with my long lens which is not ideal for this job.

Just after take-off. A classic view of Shoreham Airport looking north over the Adur valley. Pity the tide was out.

Shoreham Harbour inner basin with the 'new' gas-fired power station built in 2000. It was built on the site of the old one which was much nicer looking & a more prominent landmark.
It might not have been so efficent but the plumes of white smoke from the twin chimneys acted as a giant windsock.

This is our destination. Headcorn Aerodrome, home of the Tiger Club & all sorts of other organisations.

Here's our trusty steed after landing.

It was so hot that we had the doors open on the way back. What a fantastic viewpoint.
Shame I forgot to pop my little digicam in my top pocket this morning. I'm ashamed to admit that I have no idea where this is.

One of several private airstrips we passed on our journey. One of the aircraft had just landed.

Almost home after a delightful trip. Another view over Shoreham Harbour.

Thanks to my friend Rod for his generosity.

Nice - lucky chap Doug! Lovely scenery. Sadly my weekends flying was confined to a long straight line over two parts of the world which aren't great for sightseeing - one of them being the atlantic, which isn't very scenic at all.

Headcorn (formerly Lashenden during the war - confusingly the wartime Headcorn was further north!) is a lovely place, although I haven't been for a year or two. Once I get the time to get my PPL sorted I'll have to go and join the Tiger Club. :)

LOL great shots, but maybe I should get some pictures of the lightning and heavy rain to dispute your claim. :D

PS - the resevoir looks very much like the eastern tip of Bewl Water to me near Tunbridge Wells. Occasionally sailed there in my youth. :)

Super shots, Doug. My first 15 minutes of stick-time were in the front seat of a Cub. Seven years ago now. Cripes, I'm getting old. :)
