Had the afternoon off today so I thought I'd head up to Morristown and see how long I could spot before I got kicked out. About 15 minutes to be precise.

Some guy... I'm assuming he was a manager or something at the FBO. He told me not to take pictures, yadda yadda yadda... private property... so on and so forth. I didn't give him a problem or anything and I sat back down in my truck, listening to my scanner and noting registrations.

About five minutes later a younger dude in a security truck pulled up and asked me if I was taking pictures, I said yeah... He knew about planespotting and all, though he said that I was on private property and anyone could be asked to leave at any time for any reason. So he asked me to move along. Whatever.

Oh yeah... there were these signs posted all around...

man security is getting ridiculous. cant even look up in the sky anymore to take a photo. but better to be safe than sorry

I can understand places like Boscombe having signs up prohibiting photography, but small civil airfields....that's insane!

That's odd, considering that the field is owned by the town of Morristown... it's Morristown Municipal Airport.  ;) It's operated by DM Airport Developers, Inc. , and I doubt they have any legal basis for forbidding photography.
Heck, I've taken a few pictures on the ramp there and nobody bothered me, nor did I see any signs... maybe it's a new thing.
I can't say it makes any sense... in the old days, spotting was often discouraged only if people blocked the roads around an airport when parked near the fence.

But shooing away photographers is an opportunity for them to puff themselves up with a little post-9/11 "whatever"... do they really think you'll be putting in a call to "OSB" next?

I wonder if this has something to do with Honeywell operating from the airport. I recall a similar thing happening at Shoreham many years ago. 1961 to be exact. It was then owned by Brighton, Hove & Worthing town councils but the whole airport had been leased to the recently formed Beagle-Miles Aircraft Ltd. My little brother came to me in tears after a jobsworth security guard* had ripped the film from his camera. Anyone would have thought it was a top-secret military base.

*The same idiot tried to tell me that I had no right to set foot on the airfield. I replied that it would be very difficult to do my job without doing so & that I probably had more right to be airside than he did. I reported him for being officious & never saw him again so I had my revenge. :evil
