Any particular reason the RAF is cutting back so much?

Someone mentioned this "elsewhere" the other day, and I was moderately surprised when I gave the answer to the question "how many frontline Sqns does the RAF still have".

38... :)

...(however 38-"25"=37!) :)

Interesting to here that 56Sqn is reforming at Waddo when it closes as the F3 OCU.

Any particular reason the RAF is cutting back so much?

25 are going now that there are 2 operational Typhoon Sqns at Coningsby. This will leave 2 F3 Sqns at Leuchars. Over the past few years the RAF has actually gained a few Sqns and capabilities (such as C-17, Typhoon, Sentinel, Merlin), really with only the loss of the (very old, much loved) Jag and (slowly) the F3, which will go out of service when it was planned to early in the next decade.
