Just in case anyone hasn't heard the news.
http://www.canon.co.uk/For_Home/Product_Finder/Cameras/Digital_SLR/EOS_450D/index.asp They're already taking orders in my local camera shop. Apparently a new Nikon DSLR is also on the cards.

I've read the message on dpreview. Not a lot has changed.
12 Mp's in stead of 10 Mp's, spotmetering and (oh dear me) live view. SD-cards instead of Compact-flash too.
Lot's of heated discussions going on in my Belgium Digital forum about this one and the 40D.
Just use the camera people, instead of babbling about specs...

Words came to mind when I heard this. Angry Words. Bad words. Words that should never be repeated.

Less than a week after I buy a 400D, a new one comes out and will (as I guess) drive the price of mine down.

It will always be like that Ruptured Duck. I have bought mine in November. But I don't think prices will drop soon and besides, the newer model will be more expensive. Canon will still produce the 400D for some time.

At what point do you upgrade?
I bought the original digital rebel, 6.2 megapixels. When they announced the digital rebel xt it was only 8 megapixels. Other than resolution it wasn't much different that my camera so I held off. I finally broke down and bought the 400D because I thought it would provide for a better quality shot. In certain cases it does but in many cases the shots taken from both cameras look identical. The only exception is the file size of the image. I have found that all that means is you can print a larger version of the shot. The 6mp camera largest shot is 11x14 whereas the largest size that can be printed with the 400D is 24X36 I think.
Don't be upset that you got the 400D duck. You will find you have a great camera that can take some awesome shots. Remember, it's not the camera that makes the shot its the person behind it.

I don't think I'd upgrade from my 400D unless I was going to go up a level to the 40D (or in the future the 50D?), or if I really felt like breaking the bank, the 5D. Each of these represents a step up in the quality and size of images that can be produced, a more professional build and increased fps.
Still, it looks lovely, and that 3" screen is great

I'm thinking about it. However I am still working with a 300D thats starting to show its age. But we'll have to see how the funds are in a few months time. Might be able to pick up a bargin on a 400D which would suit me fine.

I have a good old 4MP point and shoot that's around 5 years old...It works and that's all I care about...Being a casual photographer, I don't need a fancy DSLR anyway...I honestly don't see a point in buying a new hi-fi camera...Someone care to explain?

Better Quality, More Flexibility, More Control, Build Quality good enough?
Quality I can understand...Control? I'm assuming you mean exposure values and such...Flexibility...Unless if that means they're made of rubber, I don't know what you mean by this? Build quality...Hmm...You're saying they're like Mercedes Benz where the labor costs are higher?
Thanks

Sounds like Canon is still chasing Olympus .........not that they would every admit there is something in there(Sensor cleaners, Live-View, etc) that the public may see as beneficial.............

Hey Ashar. Don't be offended, but if you only shoot photo's occasionally you can't appreciate the advantages of a DSLR. It mainly gives you the ability to make good photo's at places where a bridge or compact messes up. The sensor is bigger and better, the autofocus-action is faster, you can use better optics by changing lenses to adapt to the circumstances, you can shoot in RAW-format, you as a photographer can do the settings to get the type of shot you intended, as where a compact does it all for you.
More and more compacts and bridges take over some of these features, but they still can't get the same quality.
Don't get me wrong, compacts and bridges can be great camera's, especially if you don't want to invest to much money and time in photography.
