I actually saw one of these at Slimbridge.....on 2 tripods focused on one position hoping that something would come into the frame....no versatility whatsoever...

You could buy a ferrari 360 early model aston martin db9 for that.

However to say the lense is useless or impractical is not at all true. It's obviously useful to someone. You'll find a couple of these at F1 events for instance, races like Spa or hungary where you cant get close to some of the best action spots. If you belong to the big 3 companies usually they'll cover the cost for their top photographers.

Good luck with shooting speeding F1 cars at 1200mm!

the idea is in the corners or at the end of a long straight where they have time to focus and plan the shots.
Also take into account these guys are probably a million times better at what they do than anyone on this forum. Thats why they are sent all over the world while being paid to do it.

We have professional photographers on SimV do we? Often it's more about the position you get in and the people you know in professional photography, not taking the shots.

from the attitude and comments made by various people here you'd have thought so. (not a personal thought of just me but the general feeling amongst quite a few)

Can't say I disagree to be honest (although I'm probably a chief culprit)....
