Ok, are there any Nikon users out there?  Why or why not should I get that verses a Cannon.  I am really new to photography.  I have been impressed with the performance of my own coolpix, and have heard great things about nikon.

Your sticking your neck out my son... the Canon clan is mighty and powerful... and so is the Nikon side!

Jokes aside, people tend to get arguementative when it comes to these 2 types... but here we're friendly... so our members should be able to give you some advice...

Here's mine... Canon - dust-reduction system... Nikon - nothing... my 2 cents...  ;)

I have a Nikon D40 which I can definately recommend. The only reason I chose it over the Canon EOS 350D is because it just felt so much more user friendly, easier to hold, the controls were easier to operate and it could do everything i would need from it. What I would suggest is find cameras from Nikon and Canon that are comparible in terms of the features you want and then visit your local stockist and ask if you can try them out. Then go with whichever you feel most comfortable with. (and whichever you can afford. )

If I remember correctly, Dave (fly2e) uses a nikon, and with all due respect to all our other contributers, Dave has produced time and time again the highest quality pictures of the lot. So asking him for some info would be a good start.

All things fair I think the real questions is, what type of glass ( lenses) does mr. Fly2e use... I've read enough that that is the REAL source of quality shots!

Id have to agree with Iwannabeapilot...  My Uncle owns the 350D and I used it back a while ago, and ended up purchasing the 400D myself (Hes the Prof. Photographer, and wants my camera...  there is a Major jump between just the Feel of the 350D and 400D...)

I would recommend exactly what Iwanabeapilot said.  Go out to a local Camera Shop, and ask to see some that are in your Price range, Generaly they will let you snap some photos in the store, but basicly - just get a really good feel for the ones your looking into and toss the ones that are out of your price range / the ones that just dont fit in your hand well / or really aren't quite up to the Stats you want... then if anythings Left, go with it! hah..

A lot of my photography was done with a Kodak Easy share Point and shoot camera.. and turned out comparable to some of the shots with my 400D (the 400D just makes it so much harder to pick and choose the good ones...)

My Father has one that Might qualify as "Advanced Point and Shoot" thats really why he wanted the one he did..

Its a Panasonic Lumix, Ive used it Back before I had the Canon... Its a good "Point and Shoot" with the ability to add "Wide Angle" and such lens adapters...  Panasonic Lumix would be something to look into, they are definitely more Pocket book friendly as well..

I agree so much so, that I have to tell everyone about my latest purchase....its a point and shoot camera with an internal zoom lens (non-protruding from the body). It's 7 MP, has good but not exceptional zoom capability( 7x optical), has image stabilization in more than one mode and can shoot video at 640x480-30 frames/sec with sound, till the card is full, and has a 2.5 in screen for viewing.......

Now for the kicker, why did I buy a camera like this ?.....As Tweek says, it's about needs. I needed one to fit inside my motorbike helmet so I can capture videos as I ride around the island and share them with you lot next year........

Oh yeah, ......it's a Casio EX-V7 Exilim......and it fills my needs quite nicely.........

Also rounds out my other digital cameras....Olympus C2040z 2 MP and Olympus E-500 dSLR 8MP System and all get used as needs arise !
