Ok heres the deal,

Last week i bought the Fuji s5700 as there was a deal at a local shop. I am a complete amateur with cameras and don't really have a clue with regards to the F settings and the shutter speeds and so on.

i have the s5600, and the zoom isn't grainy unless you have the digital zoom turned on. Can you post some examples?

As a tip, in good light I tended to use the 'N' natural light setting, or the 'A' aperture priority setting. I would set this to max aperture (f3 ish/largest aperture/fastest shutter speed) to get a narrow depth of field and freeze the action, or to the minimum aperture (f8/smallest aperture/slowest shutter speed) to get a large depth of field and blur the action

These were taken with comparatively slow shutter speeds, 1/150th and 1/210th respectively. Combined with the zoom level (I would guess that 196mm was maximum zoom) then this is going to cause a real problem in terms of camera shake. You are already on f3.5, which will probably be thelargest aperture available on your camera at that zoom level, so optically the camera will be allowing in as much light as it can. I think that your issue here is the shutter speed and the magnification of camera shake caused by the use of maximum zoom.

A way of dealing with this may be to increase the ISO setting, which changes the sensitivity of the digital sensor. This would enable you to go for a higher shutter speed as the sensor would capture more light in less time, freezing the action and reducing the shake effect of the lens at maximum zoom.

To add another lens which increases the zoom would probably only magnify the effect you are already seeing.

Of course, increasing the ISO settings introduces more digital 'noise' into the image, which can also cause the image quality to deteriorate.

I'm not claiming to know it all, but these would be the things that I would consider.

Also, not sure where these were taken, but some distortion may be caused by heat haze.

On full zoom in less than ideal conditions I think mine has still given me shots like this, but auto should overcome many of these issues. However if you understand the factors that cause the problem then it can help you to be more creative with fast and slow shutter speed shots, and depth of field.

might be just me... but i think you cant change the lens on that one.
And you should always disable digital zoom.... most of the cameras that i know have the 'OR' mode on that... either digital or lens but not both

This may sound simple and basic, but are you half holding the shutter button to focus correctly before fully depressing it?

I am holding the shutter half way to focus yes.

Thanks Steve ill, try to go for a higher shutter speed and try to reduce the shake.  Next time i give it a try ill use the 'N' setting or the 'A' and manually change the f setting.
