Peg was boarded at a nearby PetsHotel while I was away, not her first time there, and it seems she caught pneumonia there.
 She was fine when I picked her up yesterday, but started coughing a bit by nightfall, and when I got home from work today, she was spitting up cupfuls of mucus. Rushed her to the vet, where they diagnosed pneumonia, gave her a huge subcutaneous fluid injection that left a big temporary hump on her back, and dosed her on antibiotics. Got a prescription for two more weeks' worth of the stuff, too. She seems better already, napping with her new friend "Pengy", my trusty cool-vapor humidifier, helping her breathe better.





As long as she doesn't take a turn for the worse this weekend, she should be OK, but it's too early to tell for sure. The visit and meds cost over $500, and if she gets worse and I have to take her in for oxygen therapy, I don't even want to consider how much that will cost... but seeing how she's never gotten sick before in over ten years, I think I'm ahead of the game.

I know the Pegster has a few friends here; thought you should know. It really is astonishing because she's never been sick since I got her, but I guess her age and the stress of being separated again (although she seems to enjoy her stays there) made her susceptible. Can't really blame the kennel; the dog that gave it to her may not have been showing overt symptoms. But I intend to mention it to them...
I'll keep everybody posted on her progress, and I feel pretty confident that she will pull through.

Poor Peg...

Vets bills can be high! My male cat has allready had Hepatitis and a blocking in the urinary-canal ( wich lead to the amputation of his... ehrmmm.. you know... and knowing that he was neutered, I don't think I can call him male anymore)

Both times he was a the brink of death, yet we managed to pull him trough... it costs money, but if you love your pets, you should take care of them...

She's got a loving, caring owner; that's 1/2 the battle... Give her a chest rub from me  :)

How's Peg today, Can we have an update.

Doing better... not hacking up sputum much now, but that's not necessarily good (it should increase once the bacteria are defeated and her lungs can start getting rid of the stuff).
But she's a little more active, ate a little but still won't drink any water, gums and tongue nice and pink (meaning she's getting enough oxygen into her blood), and she even wagged her tail a little. I think she's out of danger now, if not quite out of the woods.

Thanks... actually, I've been asked to work in Biloxi, Miss. for up to three months starting late this month... my friend Lyell said Peg can stay with her and Doug at their house in Asbury Park while I'm away. That will work just fine, but I'm not going anywhere until she's recovered.

I hope she gets better too

As Im typing this, my puppy is running through the living room with a paintbrush in her mouth (apperanty she was helping my dad paint :-?) its hard to beleive things like this could happen to such great animals

I hope Peg gets better. My grandmothers dog got sick a couple days ago.
