Fantasy of Flight- part 5

Moving along into the south hangar...

A Cierva C30-A gyroplane:

A close encounter of the Stangalicious kind: the gorgeous Cripes Amighty, a P51-D.... be still my heart. Beautiful... and still flying. :)

Another (another!) resplendently restored Mustang, the P51-C Ina, painted as a tribute to an ace of the Tuskegee Squadron. Also airworthy.

This Grumman F-3F is another treasure... hobbled together from a few totaled "flying barrels"... the wingspan is about the same as a C172 (not counting that it's doubled), yet it sports an 850hp powerplant. It's heavy and pretty slow considering the horsepower, but I'll bet it is a real handful.... especially in the takeoff roll.

Image

Another classic Grumman: a "Duck" painted in tribute to a famous example that brought candy and medical supplies (and probably ammo ;) ) through the Japanese blockade to besieged troops in the Philippines.

Up in the gallery, some oddities:
A Fieseler V-1- a real one, apparently...

Image

And very convincing replica of a Bachem "Natter", which allegedly could climb at 37,000 (!) fpm to attack bomber formations with 24 rockets  fired from the nose... all at once, I think. Makes a ride in a Komet look like a walk in the park.

A peek at the cockpit of the Natter.

Next: Back outside...

Nice to see the Cierva again - last time I saw that must be close to 10 years ago now when it was sold by the Shuttleworth Collection (it had been a non-flyer, taxying only!) :)

I doubt it'll ever even taxi again- it's pretty much an ornament now. Too bad.

An autogiro taxying isn't that exciting! The roof's probably the best place for it! ;D

One flies in Spain though I believe - there must be someone over there brave/daft enough to fly it! ;D
