Sunny morning randoms

A few days ago I decided to bust out the camera, as the morning sunlight was very nice.

A very clear, cold morning here in "Brick City"... a look across The Ironbound, with Manhattan in the distance.

That sun sure feels good... and who's that...?

Image

Why it's Peg (The Wonder-Rotty!)... basking like a big fat lizard. Warmin' up them old bones, eh girl?

Image

The loft looks huge when it's lit up like this in the morning... usually looks like a cave.

A halfway-decent daytime Moon shot:

That looks really cool, Sean. Do I spy a crummy drum set? Has someone done some impulse purchasing? ;D

Is that your residence ? I hope you don't mind my comments here, but I'm (almost) speechless.

On one hand, the decor is.. umm  .. yeah.  On the other hand it's perfect... If tried to imagine a would-be writer, bachelor's urban loft...  well, now I don't have to... my imagination is shamed by the reality. It looks like a place I'd hope never to live and a place I truly wish I did live; all at once  :) The tall, brick-framed windows are priceless. I see a utilitarian coziness too. Now... where's the hot-tub  8-)

Seriously.. thanks for sharing. I'm still enjoying it...

Ummm.. it is your home, right ?

Yeah... the King of Impulse Purchasing: Andrew... haunting flea markets and estate auctions... he's filled the place with junk since he moved in.  :-/  Then there's the two PA heads that don't work... nobody remembers where they came from.

There's enough equipment to jam with, but the drums are garbage and since all the other musicians moved out... well, I find it hard to jam with people who can't play.  :D

Not much music going on there, which is fine by me: my room is on the other side of that wall. The bakery sign was a Christmas present to me from Lyell... she knows me pretty well. ;)

I've lived here for about ten years- drafty, crumbly, noisy, and just generally funky, and I share it with a bunch of people who are mostly slobs and freaks, ( ;) ), but it's a lot of elbow room for not  much money. Works for me, and I dread having to find new digs when the lease expires in about two years (Lyell's most likely not going to renew because the rent's probably going to go way up), and I don't want to take it).  I think I'll go bananas if I have to move into a normal apartment or whatever...

A hot tub would be cool, but unless we find one in the street, it ain't gonna happen. ;).
Almost everything you see in these photos was found or bought at flea markets (except the barber pole, which was stolen... no, it wasn't me). there's incredible potential in this space, but I've already put way too much money and sweat into it... tired of increasing the value of the landlord's property and getting squat in return.

I did build a nice big tiled shower enclosure a few years back, but I don't want to post pics until I get a chance to re-do the grout and caulk... it's gotten pretty nasty; needs a proper once-over. Plus Andrew and I are sort of re-modeling that particular bathroom... so far he's been putting up cedar siding in there for... oh... about 3 months... and has yet to put one board up. :D He's a brilliant carpenter and a good guy, but he is the most sluggish good-for-nothing lout I have ever met.  Absolutely useless.

The other "lofties" can barely handle screwing in a lightbulb without mishap,  so these improvements can take some time, and there are corners where the dust-bunnies are so large and savage that people have gone in there and never been seen alive again. ;D

One of these days, as I've said before, I'll post a full photo-tour of the entire place... we usual do a little tidying-up in the springtime; maybe by then the various remodeling projects will be done (including my room, which is sort of an endless project).

I gotta tell ya, this looks to be the consumate bachelor pad.....in fact I had a single friend in Toronto who lived pretty much the same lifestyle in a loft downtown (your place and his are very similar).........it's a home we all wish to have.......
I wish I had the interest in a job in the area which would allow me that kind of space......instead, at the end of this month I'm moving out into the country onto a golf course in a modular with no space at all.......it's gonna cost me all that I have accumulated in 5 yrs here, so I know how you don't look forward to the end of your lease......I hope you do better, than what is in store for me........... :-/

Jeez, I hope you play golf...  :-?
Or at least you'll be allowed to fly R/C planes there... wow; a golf green for a runway, that'd be nice. ;d

I've always had a sorta mystic longing to live in a loft like that. The high ceilings, tall windows, open beams & supports and wooden floors are just part of the appeal. Trains right outside the window are a bonus. I can't help but wonder about the building's history. If/when it was warehouse space; what was stored there... If/when it was office space; what kinda work was done there... And of course, what now famous writer once lived there  ;)

In Columbus, they're converting old buldings into loft-style condo/apartments as fast as the building permits can get printed. I have a little lake-front "cottage" (first step in fixing it up would be a bulldozer) up in Michigan and I keep a sterile, modern apartment here. I looked into some of these new lofts... I could buy a mansion back home on Lake Huron for what they cost  :o

I like the first one. It's a typical NJ shot with the cars lined up on the street and the PATH trains on the move.  :)

It's about 100 years old; forget the name of the company, but it was built for manufacturing jewelry.
Don't know the complete history, but when Lyell, Stevie Z. and I moved onto the top floor 10 years ago, most of the building was abandoned sweatshops, and we were the first whacky bohemians to actually try to live there. ;D

I love it... can't believe I moved out for over 2 years; big mistake, much as I liked living in "the country" for a while. It was great to come back to the loft, despite all the minor annoyances.

Yes indeedy, all good things must come to an end, and once the new stadium and attending luxury-condo development is finished (oddly enough on the site of another old factory bldg I used to live in), the value of this lot will skyrocket... when this lease rolls over we will very likely be priced out.

It's too bad... I will never find another deal like this within 50 miles of NYC... it's one of the last cheap lofts in the area.

How on earth do you heat up such a vast place?  :o Still a very special style of living in my book...  :)

Great shots...
