I'm getting to the point of buying my first telephoto lens for my 400D....I was looking at the canon 75-300mm USMIII this

But now I have spotted an offering from sigma;

Has anyone got these lenses, especially the sigma one? If so how are they....are they worth the money...pros and cons etc

if your planning on a lot of airshows, then the canon is the better choice. It focuses faster.

I'd go for the Canon, without question. You're much better off staying with lenses from the company your camera is from in my opinion. Have tried Sigma (not that one) equipment and wasn't impressed.

I always get told this with windsurfing kit...you should 'standardise' to one company. I still don't understand why? Do you actually reckon they will work any (noticeably) better together than one from, for instance, Sigma?

I have a sigma 300mm lense and its just not that good.

O really. What camera are you using it with? Just out of interest what is bad about it, photographers always moan about Sigma, well most of them...? I genuinly want to know, as soon as i get the cash together for a D80 im probably gonna go buy a few Sigma lenses also!

Whats bad? Well its very slow to focus, and struggles to lock on to a moving target, its manual focus is aweful as the thing is too light and you just end up going past the focus point no matter how hard you try to be gentle.
Next, unless the day your using it in is absolutly perfect, IE: minimal clouds sun behind you and being not so low but not to high in the sky, you just end up with very soft and very noisey photos. Old Warden in september at about 2:30 in the afternoon was the only time I've gotten a very good photo from mine.

I'd also like to mention once you go past 200mm the photos get really soft.

Probably because the image quality is rarely as good as a equivalent Canon/Nikkor delivers. I'd show you some examples of my Sigma 80-200 shots but I long since deleted them completely.

The only real complaints I've heard about Sigma's lenses have to do with quality control.

I've got the same question, I'm looking for a good zoom lens to replace my Tamron 55-200.
It has to be compact so I can take it with me on holidays. I've got the Bigma (Sigma 50-500) for spotting but it's way to big and heavy to take it with me when I travel. I need it for spotting and general holiday pics. My camera is a Canon 350D.
