He's been deployed to the Persian Gulf 3 times already aboard the USS Wasp LHD-1. It's an amphibious assault ship that carries US Marines. But it wouldn't surprise me to see this ship end up in Persian Gulf anyway. He is in charge of the radar repair section of the ship. He's been in the Navy for 10 years now.

He did say that any aircraft getting with in 150 miles of this ship with a hostile IFF code will be shot down. He also said when he hears the Phalanx CIWS power up, thats when he starts to worry. Because it means the target has hit 15 miles and is still inbound. If he hears the Phalanx CIWS start firing, the target is at 5 miles or less. As he puts it, this is when you start looking for a fast exit location....lol.

Sounds like a good duty if they stay out of the Persian Gulf.... :-/

All they have to do is pretend they couldn't find the way out of the Mediterranean...  ;)  ;D

God knows what the designer was thinking of when he drew the superstructure to that thing. Function before beauty I suppose. I must say I'm suprised that she has torpedo tubes though.

Yep, she won't win any beauty contests, thats for sure. Those octagon shapes are the AN/SPY-1 phased array radar and can monitor multipule targets in the air and clear down to sea level. My son said it's a real buggar to work on.

You say your son is in charge of radar repair. That sounds a lot like what my grandpa was doing in the North Atlantic in WWII. Though I think he was just in charge of the radar full stop. Had to be able to operate and repair it.

Not sure whats behind the huge wall? This picture was taken on the 4th when they were shipping out. You can see more of the AN/SPY-1 phased array radar on the back of the super structure.

Alight Ozzy, now that is just scary....don't ever say "cyan" or "motif" every again, it's against the man rules.  ;D

...oh and she's not a boat, she's a ship.....only submarines are called boats.  ;)
