My New Toy

I used to have a Mamod steam car when I were a lad, & after chatting to mate I decided that I would buy another Mamod - a traction engine this time.

So I had a look on ebay & waited a little while for a really nice condition one to come up (the older models were built better, so a good one is harder to find) - this one is from about 1980 but has been really well looked after.

& here it is, my new Mamod TE1A:


Not in bad nick for an (approx) 36 26 year old engine:


Just about to fire 'her' up - put the water in the boiler:


Light the fuel tablets & put them under the boiler:


Wait a few minutes for some good steam to build up, then crank the engine over:


& keep an eye on the water level in that little window on the back:


I've put some video's on YouTube so you can see it running:

(a): Running around the kitchen floor.

(b): Fast running.

(c): Slow running.

I had one of them years ago ........ I think it's in a local  museum near Liverpool that my dad is involved with.

Great fun and give you a good idea about how difficult steam engines were to run well.

I used to love it when he had it running. He had the absorbent fabric burner, so we were playing with meths a lot

A few years ago I was bought a static Wilesco steam engine. I've only run it a couple of times but it's great fun. I'll post a pic......

Hi TSC:

Did they recommend a fine machine oil like 3:1 for keeping it lubricated?

That is what I use and it is the same oil the old girl uses on her sewing machine.  ;)

In the second pic you can see clearly a lever with a ring on the end of it.

Is that a whistle?

They are still quite common over here, but it is getting more difficult to find one in good condition admittedly.

I sure do intend to look after this one, I had a car one before, but it got consigned to the garage for 20 years  :( When this one's not running it takes pride of place in the living room.
