It's not "dumpster-diving", it's "gleaning"...

Postby beaky » Wed Oct 25, 2006 11:05 pm

Passed a 2-yd hopper almost full of old books on the way home this evening... found a nice 1934 National Geographic on top, so I rounded up Maris and Andrew after I got home and recruited them to help me load up the car and bring them back to see what we had.
Maris is a sometime rare book dealer and Andrew just likes old junk, so they were eager to help.

Mostly crap, a lot of advertising yearbooks, plays, children's books, and second-rate art books... a lot of it too musty to deal with, but much of the stuff is in good shape, and should air out nicely.
I got first dibs and made out pretty well. None of them are really valuable, but I just picked what I liked, anyhow.

Here's a few highlights:

A very "pulpy" 1949 edition of 1984, in excellent condition; two volumes of the nifty Macmillan "pocket encyclopedias" which I've never heard of... sadly, only these two; I'd love to have the whole aviation set...

I did score big-time with all four volumes of Orwell's essays, letters, etc...looking forward to reading those, as I only know his novels and short stories.

The Nat'l Geo. was the only one in the whole pile, BUT- half of it is text, pictures and maps of the Lindberghs' epic N. Atlantic wanderings in 1933 (text by Anne Morrow Lindbergh). They took off from Flushing Bay, NY, flew all around Greenland and Iceland, and even wound up in England at one point, even though there wasn't much need for map-surveying of that particular island. ;D
there are something like 80 photos in this massive article, mostly aerial shots or pictures of the gorgeous Lockheed Sirius floatplane, named Tingmissartoq.

This was a library copy, and it looks like nobody ever looked inside. It's in superb condition, except for the cover. I'd love to scan these amazing photos, but I'd probably have to trash the binding to do it right.

But here's a couple of samples:

And a look at some of the nifty illustrations of the classic airliners in one of the Macmillan books: could come in handy for some FS repaints, eh?

Another nice find was a huge-format book of beautiful lithos of Norman Rockwell's stuff, with a biography. He's often derided as a hack illustrator who propogated a myth of an America that never really existed, but I think he deserves more credit as a serious artist. I've never liked photo-realism much, but I always liked Rockwell for his humanism and his eye for capturing fleeting moments.
He always struck me as a brilliant photographer who happened to work with paint instead of  film.
This is my favorite painting of his, depicting the explosive situation in the South when public schools there were desegregated by Presidential decree in the early '60s. There's an excellent quote with this one from the artist:
"I was born a white Protestant with some prejudices that I am continuously trying to eradicate. I am  angry at unjust prejudices, in other people or in myself."

Got to keep a sharp eye out... ;)

They're clearing out a small sort-of factory space; there's another hopper full of old electrical and plumbing fittings, and who knows what else might come out of there. ;D

Nice, Sean. :) Maybe you'll find a couple of nine-irons to use as rudder pedals in your simpit. ;)

I've got a few more books I want to show off later, and yes, if I find any curious or useful hardware, I'll post pics. ;)

Already covered: I built my pedals a long time ago, and they're still working OK.
Reminds me that I was reading an AOPA Pilot article about a restored Lockheed Electra Junior recently; there's a pic of the panel, and there's a little crank marked "rudder bungee", obviously for adjusting the tension.
Made me proud I'd chosen a bungee for self-centering my pedals... ;D

I don't think I'm going to rig a crank for that, though... it's a little easier to get to in my 'pit than in the tailcone of that airplane... ;D

Nine irons? Say, that's a good idea... you have the mind of a simpit-builder, all right. I'll keep an eye out for some, although it'll be hard finding a left and right set.
Would you believe that I had in my posession recently a set of old left-handed clubs, but threw them out (somebody here got them at an auction, but didn't want them)? :D
I don't play golf... I kept the putter, though. Could come in handy for home defense, and when I finally catch whoever has been breaking into my car, I'm going to give them a couple of whacks with it. Fore!!! ;D

Huh?? What're you talking about now?  "New age DC3"?  do you mean the Piper?  ???

Whatever; if you're talking about going flying, come on into Linden or Central Jersey Regional and I will be happy to chauffeur you to Newark for belly-busting all-you-can-eat rodizio, followed by a game of pool and a rumpus session with the Pegster back at the loft... you (and whoever you bring) are covered, no problemo. We even have overnight accomodations, if you're cool with the "bohemian" thing (may involve sharing a sofa with a dog who drools and farts in her sleep).
Pilots and all SimVers are welcome here at the drop of a hat, anytime, day or night.

Uh... just don't come Nov. 11-14th; I'll be in Chicago.
;D

Whoops... they've emptied the dumpsters. But who knows? there could be more "treasure" in there by this evening... if the shop is still open when I pass by today, I might say hi and ask if they've got anything else they're getting rid of... ;D

I may have the mind of one, but I sure don't have the money of one. :P I'd much rather do the real thing and just take flying lessons, which I'm scheduled to start sometime early next year by the way. :)

Well, I'm not loaded either: I do have a job, and make good money, but I have plenty of bills to pay and I don't feed Peg the cheap stuff, nowhumsayin?
There is a point here...gimme a sec...

Right; the point is: my rudder pedals cost me about 10 bucks in hardware, not counting the joystick (the equivalent of which you can get right now at Radio Shack for $8, at least the one I go to in Manhattan).

The simpit, when complete, minus hacked controllers but including other electronics, will probably come in at less than $300. The reason? Scrounging. A lot of the stuff I'm using I found years ago and set aside "for just such an emergency," as Foghorn Leghorn would say.
Creativity is the key ingredient, and flexibility with your design... not money.
It helps that I have a little shop space and some tools and my job yields all kinds of bits and pieces that
I can use, but there's always a way to improve your simming experience without spending much money at all.
Time, however... that's a problem sometimes. ::)

I see what you mean by that. I guess my problem would be that I have the attention span of a gnat and would just move on to another project, leaving a big hunk of metal sitting beside me here in my basement.** :P

To be honest, I'd rather just spend the approx. $400 and go for one of these babys;

**like my unfinished Revell F-8 Crusader series. "Yeah, mom I'll finish it sometime soon. ::)"
