I really think they should put '666 indoors. A mess it may be, but it is the only Nimrod R1 on public display...

As for the fins, two very past ghostly and stormy fighters... ;) ;D

Second fin is a Lightning. From Charlies clue I'd have to say the first is a Phantom though I don't know for sure. :)

I Dont know why they dont stick this fins inside, it seems a bit pointless leaving them there!

I'd still prefer the Nimrod inside though... Tough piece of kit to end up looking like that...

The damage to the Nimrod looks like more than just weathering...

Is there a reason why it ended up there looking like that?

After an engine fire it was ditched in the Moray Firth in the north of Scotland.
The Owner says that any further restoration will damage the unique story of the aircraft (or something like that).

Very interesting. I had no idea this place existed. Quite a collection. http://www.aeroflight.co.uk/mus/uk/aeroventure/aeroventure.htm

Neither did I until the day we went.

Sticking it inside would preserve the story...

Interesting story though, having met both the Captain and Nav from the trip. It was all caused by one nut, which, 30 years earlier was considered to be a potential weak point. A stronger nut would have cost more...

...to cut a long story short, thankfully they managed to ditch before the wing burnt through, and the RAF lost one of its highest value aircraft. ::)

The aircraft registration wasn't the only "666" connection either...

Yes, one of only three of this type. Ironically, it was also the first test flight of the first Nimrod given to a civy firm for servicing.

Indeed it was on a flight test. Of course, technically, it is now one of four, albeit slightly unservicable and mostly scrapped! ;D

What I ment was, it was a 51 sqd aircraft and in total only three were "fitted out" for 51 use, so my father tells me. He was an "AEop" on 51 for many moons a long time ago.
