Now that's different! That condor looks like he could take off with his handler still holding on... that's a damned big bird. :o

The steam engines are terrific! ;D

Nice assortment of shots Ivan.

Are they using coal or wood to fire those steam engines, I know several that use both types of fuels as well as oil. :)

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

That picture was from the first show (the condor didnt fly in that show), the second time the condor decided to try a little flight, and the handler had to fight the beast to keep it under control.

Smaller one probably used oil (didnt see any coal or wood there)
The tractor (which is a 1/2 scale replica that weights 6 tons) used coal

Hey Ivan,

I don't know if you've heard of this, but every year outside of a town called Edgerton, Wisconsin, USA there is an event called the Rock River Thresheree.  Basically, it is just a collection of old farm machinery, but here you can see full size steam tractors, and these are driven down the same paths that you're walking on.  They've a few larger stationary steam engines as well, I think one has a 22' Dia. flywheel.

Here's a link to the website if you're interested.  The pictures aren't all that great, I'll try and find some if I can find them.

Anybody else heard of it?  Been there?

Ooh... that tractor looks really cool! Seems a bit Russian to me, having to warm up the oil first... lol...  ;D

Nice photos Ivan. Makes a nice change from all those aeroplanes. ;)

Do you have a new digital camera? These don't look like scanned images.

Its more like an enormously enlarged model plane engine... what they are heating up is the glow head to get the first few rotations going before the combustion provides enough heat to keep itself going

A hot bulb engine then. There are old marine engines in Scandanavia like that which you start by placing a little paraffin burner under the bulb then rotating it. I assume (as he's only heating up a single head) that it's a single cylinder?

As for steam engines, you can't move for them here. There are just hundreds dotted all over the country. In fact I know the guy who owns the oldest moving steam engine in the world.

Single cylinder, with two flywheels (the other one is hidden behind the exhaust)

I've been there!  I live in Madison now, and my dad and I took my Grandpa there a couple of times, and it was fantastic everytime.  I love seeing the amazing things people came up with to make farming easier or more efficient.  It's really a great to see those old tractors and farm equipment running like the day they were built. :)
