Ok, so we're at the end of the summer holidays, so a quick quiz, who can tell me what these markings are all about then?

If you know then hold your tongue for a little while, PM me if you want official recognition as the first to spot them, otherwise, have a guess

I'm reviving this one out of spite, just because no one replied first time around  >:( ..........  ;)

Only kidding  8), however I did think these were cool, so I'm giving you all one last chance before I take the hint and let the thread die.

These markings are in riverside rocks, and are shallow grooves joining up circular pits, someone must be able to make some reasonable guesses  ::)

After this it's back to planes, guaranteed at least one response, or maybe I'll take the hint from Doug and go beer tent spotting  ;)  ;D

I'll not drag it out then ;D

These are two of the three rock cannon at pont y pair in Betws-y-coed, North Wales.

A rock cannon is a series of shallow bores joined by a groove carved into the rock. The bores were filled with black powder, topped with crushed slate, and fused with a feather quill filled with powder. Powder was then poured into the groove between the bores, and lit.

The powder in the groove would burn and set off each of the bores in turn, sounding like cannons going off. It was used to celebrate weddings and significant occasions, more recently for the investiture of the Prince of Wales.

The first photo shows a more modern smaller cannon, but the second and third pics show an original 53 hole cannon. At first you can't quite see it, but then it suddenly stands out.

I've never heard of this before, but it fascinated me, what a great idea, must have been great fun ;D

How strange... and interesting.
Well, I'll be off to a rocky mountaintop next weekend with a cold chisel and some black powder... ;D

I'd do the same.....but for the court order regarding myself and black powder, and chisels, and mountain tops :(
