I just got back from lunch in Urbana (I74). I wasn't expecting much more than a smooth but hazy flight and a great burger.. BUT.. I ended up seeing a B-25 and.... AND.. B-17 in restoration. It turns out that these guys started restoring this bird back in January of this year and it's been kept a pretty good secret.
After landing (and gawking at the B-25).. I decided to walk around the area and work up an appetite. I stuck my nose in an open hangar door and was greeted by the nicest group of guys, WORKING ON A B-17

NICE! That's a nice catch for a weekend burger trip

I heard and read about the B-17 restoration project a few months ago but it's just a little too far a drive to be pratical in helping

That sounds like an interesting trip! I really wish I could volunteer at LSFM in galveston, but its an hour away and gas prices being so high....
They have a HUGE collection of planes, of course including the greatest in the world (look down), the B-17 'Thunderbird' (which broke a wingspar early this year, hopefully it will be fixed in time for Wings Over Houston) and the famous P-47 'Tarheel Hal' among lots and lots of others

That B-25 is a beauty!
Yeah.. It felt like an honor..just to stand next to the drip pan (I held my hand out, hoping for a drop of oil ;D )

Ive been fortunate enough to see one start up and taxi away, and then takeoff a little later! I was standing pretty much at the tip of the wing. It was awesome

Nice headset.
