If you think three is loud, you should hear four Harriers.... :o

Harriers aren't paticularly noisy in standard flight (like those three) it's only when they hover they go noticeably louder than a similar fast jet...

good shots

i was at cottesmore last year for ATC summer camp, the day we went to the stn fire station the harriers where praticing for the 2005 familys day. and then it was either 4 or 5 harriers doint the hover display. during which being a idiotic 16yr odl at the time thought it would be a bright idea to remove my ear plugs when i had 4/5 harriers hovering no more than 50metres away from me. OUCH it was loud

BTW the fire station is right next to the strip (like any base :P )

Shot #5 is truly incredible.

Also, are hovering-harriers louder than an afterburning F-15 going by?  The Eagle going by at full steam is by far the loudest I've ever heard.

I would say that four harriers are much louder then an F15 on full power, If you want a good idea of how your ears are feeling after that is either the same feeling after watching the whole of the Mig29OVT display without earplugs (Full afterburner for almost all of it) or a B1B takeoff.

Nice pics tweek, like the red arrows ones.

Too true....I never use earplugs, they spoil the whole display.

I think so, because the sound is more sustained as opposed to just wooshing past...

There are different kinds of loud, too.

B-1Bs are ear rattling, as with most aircraft with afterburner. A Harrier in the hover is just a sustained loudness that you sort of get used to. You wouldn't be able to keep your hands away from your ears for too long if a Harrier in the hover sounded like a B-1B!

It was actually louder in the first shot, where it was coming in slowly, at about 40-50ft up, and 25ft away (at an estimate).

And although you may think the three Harriers coming in would be loud, have you ever stopped to think about how loud the Red Arrows would be if that kind of science applied? They're certainly not 9x louder than a single Hawk! ;)

Thanks for the comments, anyway!

Thats because all the engines sounds vibrate on similar frquencies and once those vibrations are big enough they cant get any bigger......is that right or did I just make it up??

4 Blue angels going by with full afterburners is an ear blaster too. Same with the solos doing all of their fancy stuff, LOUD.
