Had a quick storm today and I got to do something I have always wanted to do. I found a cheap but effective tripod today at Radio Shack and was able to pull this off with my new Kodak Z740

F-stop: 8.0
Shutter: 8 Sec. Exposure
80 ISO
My first of many lightning strike pictures. ;D

I also have some sunset pictures and some nice military shots I got today out by KDMA if anyone is interested ;)

thats why you find yourself a nice area of sky where lightning has been constant. You set your camera to a long exposure time, I have used anything from 5 seconds right upto 30 seconds. And as others have said, just hope for some luck. Keep doing that and you are bound to get something.
Sadly lightning is rather rare in the UK, it seems.
And buy a tri-pod, its a nessecity for this type of shooting.
Great shot BAW.

OK if you can change the exposure speed on your camera to more than 2 seconds >:(
You say lightning is rare in the UK, last week we had three thunderstorms

Last week we had 5 :P but im not from UK so thats not fair ;D If i wasnt so out in the open before trying to get home i would have gotten more, the lightning was happening once evry 5 seconds it seemed. I'm definatly going to get some more shots of lightning, this one was 100% pure luck ;D

Its not that its hard, you just need luck ;D A couple shots before this one the shutter closed and about .1 seconds later the most perfect flash of lightning went off exactly where the camera was pointed. Its fun stuff and you can get some amazing results.

Cool shot. During on of many storms last week I tried taking photos of lightning. Ended up taking a couple thousand photos, and only ended up with this one....
