Backyard Flyer

My Dad has always been interested in R/C flying, but he is so bad at it that he has never had one last more than a few minutes in the air before a catastrophic crash (I've had similer luck). So for fathers day I got him this bi-plane made of indestructible EPP foam. It was so much fun that I had to get one for myself.

Here's what it looks like. The pencil was included for scale. This thing only has a 9 inch wing span. (compression actually did kill this one)

It's internal Li-Po battery is charged directly from the transmitter.

And now for some in-flight shots. Due to the small size of this thing, it was impossible to get a good in-flight picture and fly it at the same time.

It flyes nose-high all the time.

Note the lack of control surfaces. This plane opperates on a kind of differential thrust. The more throttle you give, the more it climbs. To turn, it slows down one motor and speeds up the other. Surprisingly, this setup works quite well. I would reccomend this plane to anyone who is would like to get a start in R/C flying. It is an Air Hogs Aero Ace and can be found at Wal-Mart or here: http://www.wonderhobby.com/hxmimirareco.html sold under a different name and for a little less money

I have exactly the same little toy as that!! 8)

By the way, if you want to stop it flying nose-up all the time, I cellotaped a 5 pence piece to it's nose (which I imagine would be about the same weight as a dime or a nickel in the US ;)) - flies great now :)

Funny you should mention weighting the nose. Right after I posted this thread, I took a pair of wheels from one of those balsa rubber-band planes and taped them to it. Not only is it a little more stable in flight, but I can do real landings with it. The only drawback is that the extra wieght or maybe drag seems to have slowed down the rate of turn. Still can't do a take-off either. :P

Awesome! I might have to buy one of them (do they have a UK website?). My last RC plane crashed on its debut flight . :(
