Beautiful weather in Belgium this weekend.  My girlfriend and me had nothing special to do (she has her final exams this week but she didn't feel like studying ;D), so we decided to visit some remainders of the First World war (1914-1918.).  I live pretty close to the river De IJzer (about 5km.) which was the frontline back then.

The first thing we visited was the Dodengang (Trench of Death) in Diksmuide. This is the place where the Belgian Army stopped the advancing German army in 1914.

In the top left corner you can see the river.  The German lines lay just a few meters away on the opposite bank.

In the Trenches.  The casualty rate gave the trench system its nickname and with justification as the Germans not only bombarded the system incessantly, but constantly tried to take it by raids.

After Diksmuide, we went to Vladslo to visit one of the biggest German WWI cemeteries in Belgium

Here 25600 German casualties of the First World War are burried.

Nice pictures. It must be great to see those memorials close up and in person.

I must go there one time or the other. I also wanna see the piece of Atlantikwall that's preserved at Raversijde, near EBOS...

Great shots killerbunny.

My great-grandfather fought in that region. He was very lucky to survive.
Last year I visited the whole region (following the signs for the different routes by car).
Best part is still when they play the last post at the Menenpoort in Ieper. Very impressive.

Groeten uit het verre Limburg.  ;D

The scars left by the trenches are still very visible along most of the then front lines. In some places, such as shown they've been restored.
