WWI Remnants
Posted: Mon Jun 12, 2006 5:33 pmBeautiful weather in Belgium this weekend. My girlfriend and me had nothing special to do (she has her final exams this week but she didn't feel like studying 
), so we decided to visit some remainders of the First World war (1914-1918.). I live pretty close to the river De IJzer (about 5km.) which was the frontline back then.
The first thing we visited was the Dodengang (Trench of Death) in Diksmuide. This is the place where the Belgian Army stopped the advancing German army in 1914.
In the top left corner you can see the river. The German lines lay just a few meters away on the opposite bank.
In the Trenches. The casualty rate gave the trench system its nickname and with justification as the Germans not only bombarded the system incessantly, but constantly tried to take it by raids.

After Diksmuide, we went to Vladslo to visit one of the biggest German WWI cemeteries in Belgium
Here 25600 German casualties of the First World War are burried.
