this pretty girl came in to KADW while i was based there. she had less than 10,000 flight hours when they took her in for overhaul, and was almost completely corrosion free!. many of us got excited when we heard she was coming in, but of course most of the folks in my shop had never heard of a C-47. (not a DC-3, it still has the jump fairings on the door :) )

this was her frist stop from wherever she was on her way to columbia. shes headed there to assist in the drug war. as you see the night vision/infrared camera on the nose and the turboprops, shes ready for anything :)

Looks kinda strange, a classic shape with turbo-porps and advanced surveilance-features... Sweet lines nevertheless...

Nice shots Jeph :)

Brings back some old memories....especially when I see the emergency door just behind the pilot.
That is where we used to put our milk and anything we wanted to keep cold as we had no refrigerators only hot water heaters ;).

Cheers....Happy Landings....Doug

i unfortunately dont have access to her anymore. all of these pics were taken in...um...i believe spring of 2001.

heres the last of them. sorry i dont have more from the tail side. she still had the leather, canvas, rubber, or whatever it was that they used for the gun ports on the port side. they were just without the weapons. and closed off from the outside air.

just as a heads up, the plane didnt really do much, if any better in speed with the turbo props. she came in niiiiiiiice and sloooowwwwww, and graceful. she took off in the same manner. nothing spectacular. with the turboprops, im assuming maybe better range, better altitude maybe, but V1 and approach seemed about normal for piston version

a very rare and unusual shot...the belly.

There's no reason to want more speed on takeoff and landing, when you think about it. The turbine conversion on these frames is not about that. Higher ruise speed; higher GTW thanks to the extra power, and those engines are much easier and cheaper to maintain than the old piston radials.
