I have just sifted thru a couple hundred shots for the creme de la creme, and despite the horrific lighting conditions, haze, and this stupid camera (I now officially hate autofocus!), there are many I want to show you. Could take a while to reformat them all, but for now, a little taste:
First to set the scene. Jones Beach, NY is on the southwest shore of Long Island, more or less between JFK and Republic. I got there early and staked out a good spot close to the surf. Here's a view to the north, after I first got there:
...and this is not quite near the max for the day. Very hard to get right up to the surf for taking pictures without getting beaned with a Nerf football... the problem is this is opening weekend for the beach season; some of these misguided souls were actually not here for the airshow!! I know, I don't get it either.
To wit: some of my best shots were spoiled by some person suddenly heaving into view while I was zoomed-in.
Nice bald spot, buddy...

Your kid is really cute, mister, but... please!!! This might have been my best Blue Angels shot of the day...

But there were a lot of sunbathing beauties to ogle: check this one out...

I must say that despite all this stuff, an airshow on the beach is terrific idea. And meeting up for the first time with some friends from the AOPA forums was the icing on the cake... we had fun chatting about flying and sharing this spectacular display of aircraft and piloting talent.
Next: USAF A-10 and the Red Bull MiG-17!!

Looking foward to Reading..
