David Blaine- "drowned alive"

Postby beaky » Sat May 06, 2006 1:19 pm

These endurance stunts are not as entertaining as his amazing sleight-of-hand work, but since I've been working close to Lincoln Center, I thought I'd take a quick look Monday (his first day in the tank).  Came back Wednesday with my camera to take these shots. He's supposed to come out Monday.

Pretty cool setup: that's quite a hunk of acrylic they're using there.  Don't know all the details, but I assume they're controlling the temperature of the water. He fasted for quite some time to eliminate the need to "make #2", and as in other stunts. he's wearing a catheter for the inevitable "#1".

Visitors can go right up and greet him (or flip him the bird, if so inclined). Didn't see anyone being rude... this is New York, not London. ;) :D
He seems to have a lot of female fans- I guess ladies are attracted to a guy who can stay under for prolonged periods... ;D

When I first saw him, he just had an ordinary mouthpiece, but he later donned this full-head rig, which allows him to speak to people. There are some recorded voice messages and other info on the official website...

I guess he can sleep in there; must be very weird to wake up underwater in that rig.  Stupid or not, this is not an easy thing to endure.
But on the 3rd day, he seemed to be in good spirits.

Cool pics Rotty - but I still don't get the whole point of this 'trick' - is it a case of being underwater for so many days with breathing apparatus - or does he have to spend a fair time holding his breath?? Is the tank sealed??

I'm really confused - & at the moment, unimpressed - but thats probably because I have no idea what he's doing.

Cheers,

TSC.

Very interesting. Like you I preferred his amazing magic tricks to these stunts.

Ah, yes, I forgot to mention: before he emerges on the last day, he will remove the breathing apparatus and remain submerged for 8 to 9 minutes, something like that.

I'm not super-impressed either, but his sleight-of-hand illusions are the best I've ever seen, so I respect him for that.
This is all just for publicity; Houdini set the bar way, way higher than this a long time ago.

I should've posted sooner; I figured there may be local simVers who'd be curious.

i really dont see the point, is he trying to impress people or something?

everyone at school just thinks that he is a stupid idiot who wants to be famous.  which is true.  the glass box was the worst, and i dont blame people for hitting golf balls at him and throwing food at the box.

just my thoughts, why does he do this?, does anyone actually know?, i'd like to know.

cheers

That's gonna be a major wrinkled guy when he comes out of there... hardly can imagine it's healthy to be in contact with water for that long...  :)

His hero was Harry Houdini and this is sorta one of his tricks to the extreme level.
