Need some help...

Hi guys,

Whose good at identifying biplanes then?? I have been going through my old snaps from museums and displays seeing if there is anything I can get on Airliners.net when I came across this biplane. I took the shots in September 2002 in the restoration hanger at Duxford. To be honest I'm not sure what it is - I thought it might be a Fairey Firefly II. I'm probably wrong but would appreciate your thoughts!

I was thinking of a Hawker Hart, but now I think about it, I think you're right Ken. ;)

Same family but it's the TFC Hawker Nimrod. http://www.pbase.com/stevieb/image/46895874

Indeed it is... (in essence it's a navalised version of the RAF's single seat Hawker Fury I - the Hind/Hart family were all two seaters :))

You'd be technically correct, anyway, cspyro, since the Audax, Demon, Hardy, Hartbees, Hind and Osprey were all developments of the Hart.
The Demon was specifically made as the fighter version but these pictures don't give a proper view of the observer/instructor pit which, on the Demon, was angled downard toward the front.
The Hind was a light bomber and 'should' have some indication of bomb racks as well as a more distinct downward-curved observer pit, as did the Hart Trainer.
The Audax saw more action in WW2 (especially against the Italian Fascists forces) and usually had more of a horizontal opening around the observer pit (as did the original Hart bomber) which had a 7.7mm machine mounted behind it when used in the bomber role (elsewise, often removed).
The Osprey was built for the RN and had folding wings (which quickly rules that out for this one). My guess would be a version of the Audax but I could most definitely be wrong. ???

[edit] OK. By the time I got to posting, the experts had entered (thanks, Doug). Haven't got my own picture of a Nimrod (plane, anyway) and haven't seen it before. 8)

As Doug said, it's The Fighter Collection's Hawker Nimrod S1581 (G-BWWK)...

You'd need to go 30 miles west to Old Warden to see a Hawker Hind... :)

I was making up my post before either of you were online and even visited the loo in the process. Sorry. 8)
