BinoCamera

In a search for some sort of zoom lens for my crappy 36mm lens camera, I decided to see how my binoculars would perform. Short answer: surprisingly well! :) See for yourself...

Bear in mind, this is 36mm zoom lens... with added binoculars!

Cropped down to show full size. This was taken from a distance of about 20m, and the tree was about 15-20ft higher than my view point.

A raw shot, showing the binoculars' interference!

Showing the difference between normal zoom (top right) and through the binoculars.

Drawbacks:

- Have to keep the binoculars square on to the camera lens, in order to get an even 'border' (as on the second pic). Wads of tape seem to do the trick!

- Must keep a VERY steady hand in order to get a nice crisp shot.

- Manual focus of the binoculars can be tricky. When looking through the camera, it's hard to tell whether you're as focused as you're going to get. Alternative is to focus it by looking through the binoculars yourself, though that may be a problem with moving targets. Probably best to focus at a point before hand.

When the weather clears up, I'll see how it fares with aircraft.

Yeah, I suppose it wouldn't look all that good in a public place!

Yes, It'd take a special sort of man to use that among the 400mm+ 'big boys' at an airshow and not feel like a complete prune!

When compared to the so called 400m+ big boys even my lens looks somewhat weedy!

You can get brackets that attach to tripods so you can point your camera through a telescope, binoculars, night-sight etc.

Unless I am mistaken, Alrot here used the same technique when he was at the control tower at his home airport...worked very nicely on the aircrafts...Beautiful effects if gave...

Nice shots though...I like the birds 8) 8)

There are binocs out there now with little digicams built-in; results are about the same, but not so cumbersome.

Exactly. Poverty is perhaps the father of invention...
