Well, a few weeks ago, my friend Ben soloed his first time. Actually, it was right on his 16th birthday. Heh, he and his instructor were doing togo's so he asked me if I wanted to tag along, so I agreed. Never passing up a good photo op. This, of course was still when my poor camera was working.

Anyhoo, this was his last landing with someone bugging him in the right seat. Pretty good, too.

Under the new JAA regs I believe you can solo on your 16th Bday, but cannot hold a license til your 17th...

Cool! Makes me wish I had pix of my first solo. Then again, maybe not...
Congrats to Ben, and thanks for sharing. I like that 1st shot... really shows off that lumpy, bumpy, pitched  runway. Where is that? It looks sorta familiar...
BTW, as far as that being his "last landing with someone bugging him" he's still a ways from his final check ride. If his CFI is good, he will really start to work on him now... best of luck to him!

Yeah, my solo's coming up within a couple of weeks, it's good to hear success stories of people my age

(and yeah, my parents are loaded, but I get cut off once summer rolls around.  Time for a job... )

Heard of it, thought I landed there once, but see no record of it in my logbook. I just sort of remember thatfunky runway... maybe I decided not to land there or something.

Looks like another wonderful time!

I still remember my first solo, a couple weeks after my 16th birthday, did a few TGLs on good old 10L (at Archerfield - YBAF).  My last landing was particuarly bad so I knew the instructor wouldn't let me solo.  We puled onto the taxiway, the instructor told me to stop.

At this point I think my heart was somewhere in the throat.  The instructor asked my if i thought I was safe then just said "Alright, I'm going to get out now".

Did the best circuit and landing I've ever done.  Even better then my GFPT flight test.  Which is another good thing about Australia, we can hold a license called a General Flying Progress Test at 16.  Which lets us carry passengers in the training area.  Once we have that we start on nav training.  Already on nav 4!

amazing what happens when all that excess weight disappears from the front seat  ;D...yah, my first solo was one of the best patterns i have ever flown
