In Memory of my Best Friend

Postby Willit Run » Wed Nov 30, 2005 12:01 am

It was a year ago today I lost my best friend of 13-1/2 years.  I lost my best friend Winston.  Winston was always there to greet me when I came home and he was there to cheer me up when I was down.
Winston was not just a dog or the family pet he was a family member.  Winston went everywhere with us.  We always made sure we booked our vacations at hotels that aloud pets.  Winston had a personality that was great.  Everybody in the neighborhood knew Winston and would greet him before me.  Winston loved the ocean and the snow.  It was hard to get him out of the water and hard to keep him in the house when it was snowing.

Winston's last days were great in that he seemed to be doing really well.  He had just had a check-up the week before and everything was fine.  The night before he seemed to be doing great but. in the morning things were different.  I was holding Winston in his final moments and he looked at me and gave me one of his smiles and then left us.

A day does not go by that I don't think about Winston.  He will always be in our hearts and never be forgotten. :'(

Sad... but the beautyful part is the fact that he wasn't ill for a long time and he went away while quietly in the arms of the people that loved him... I think that's a beautiful way to go...

Well, dogs are people... just not human people.  ;D
Too bad they don't live so long, but "better to have loved and lost", etc.
But it is rough- I still get wistful for the dog I grew up with, Inky (the crazy collie mix), even though she died over 20 years ago.
Reminds me I have to come up with a plan for burial of Peg (The Wonder-Rotty!)... don't want to just hand her body over to the vet when the time comes (sometimes dead pets wind up in pet food, believe it or not!)... I own no property but would like to be able to give her a proper burial... preferably without spending a fortune at a pet cemetery (heard some bad stories about what goes on there, too...).
Morbid thoughts, I know, but she's probably only got a couple of years left, despite being quite healthy.

We did.  A woman my wife works with has a niece that was given a dog.  She didn't want it and was never home.  The dog was neglected and the woman my wife works with asked if she would take her.  My wife said yes.  All the dogs I owned were alway big ( 80-125 lbs).

Meet Casey.  All 7lbs of her.  She is growing on me.
We gave her to our Daughter.

Cute little fluffball. :)

Our backyard is about 1/8 covered in kitty burials over a span of 20 years. If you want, we would gladly take her. :)

I know the feeling, but while I wouldn't put dogs on the same levels as humans I often feel that in many respects they are much better.  ::)

Nice dog.

Winston is buried in our back yard under the tree he liked to lay under when we were outside.  He has a beautiful headstone that my parents had made for us. They knew how much Winston meant to us.

That's nice. I have a couple of friends who own large wooded lots up in the hills... I should ask one of them if they've got room for Peg. Kind of an awkward question, though...
Good luck with Casey- she looks like a crazy little yapper, but a dog is a dog, after all.
I doubt I'll replace Peg- kind of looking forward to the "freedom", and it'd be very hard to find another companion quite like her... she's the oddest, most loveable, gentlest  dog I've ever met.

Wow, that's very nice of you to offer... but for heavens' sake, ask your folks first... :D

Again I thank everyone for their kind words. Today was tough and the kind words helped.
Like I said Winston is gone but, will never be forgotten!
