church install part 5- take note, Fozzer!

Time to feature the organ...
Not sure of the vintage of this beast; I think it's only about 50 years old. Haven't heard it yet, but I'm hoping to get my fumbly fingers on it at some point, if permission is granted (I can play parts of Bach's thingamajig in B Flat with two fingers, having learned it on the marimba).
This is the "office", right next to the altar. seems the organist has special shoes he wears when playing...

Image

Up in the loft: looks like a tin-knockers' flea market up here! There's another small array of pipes down by the altar for the choir. We're going to install new (very nice) mics for both. It's gonna kick major boo-tay, with the line array, six delay speakers, and subwoofers...not sure what total watts RMS will be from the amps, but...  mwahahahaha...
Seriously, much as it'd be fun to crank up the new system and make big noise with this thing, it's almost a shame to be installing a PA in such an acoustically beautiful room. The challenge will be to set it up so it merely enhances what the room is doing already...

Image

Part of the respiratory system of the organ: I think the blower's in the basement. Check out the tiny pipes, for the highest notes.

Image

Some of the wooden pipes... there's a lot of carpentry involved here, and all tight enough for a boat.

Image

These pipes are pretty weird... I guess the bends increase the length for deeper pitch without them being too tall. Note how they tune them: by tweaking the curled strips where the apertures were cut out (these pipes are just like big whistles; the sound comes out of the aperture). There's felt worked in there to prevent buzzing; very fussy work.

Image

There's another set of pipes inside a huge box in the back of the loft- check out the nifty vibrato device (rotating paddle).

Image

Naturally, all this made me think of Fozzer, who seems to enjoy playing with his organ... er, I mean... but wait! That angel playing the little virginal in that stained-glass panel... can it be?
What the-?!

...actually... ;)...!

This is Fozzers real organ...>>>

This beautiful instrument will not only produce the sound of the original classic Hammond B3 organ, but also produce the same voices as the pipe organ... ;D...!
All the different organ stops can be accuratly produded: ie, Flutes, Strings, Reeds and Diapasons, together with reverberation and chorus effects... ;D...!
Many millioins of variations of voices can be changed on the fly by means of the drawbars...Fantastic... ;)...!
You have yet to enjoy hearing Fozzer playing Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor...a sound to thrill the senses...
...trust me... ;)...!

LOL...!

Paul...;Image...;You hum it, I'll play it... 8)...!

Is it a Korg, or is that just a Korg patch displayed there (I see the filename is "willisorgan")?
Learning to play that "T and F" is on my list of things to do before I die... that and "Maple Leaf Rag"... ;D

All due respect to your talents but I couldn't help wondering why this should be necessary. If that organ & pipes were specifically designed for the acoustics in the building & everything is in working order it should be quite capable of filling it with a very satisfying sound. There's nothing quite like hearing a big pipe organ played properly in its original surroundings. The bass notes of the organ I've heard at a concert in one of our local churches vibrate the whole place & go right through you & everyone else in the audience. An amazing experience & most impressive. If it's not been maintained properly or has some other defect it might be better & much cheaper to get one like Fozzer's. I've seen even basic electronic keyboards used in some churches & the sound all depends on the capabilities & skill of the organist.

Great shots in all your strings!!  Looked like a ton of work.  Some of the foundation work looks a little well, not to stable but i'm sure it's stronger than most.

As for that last picture of the stainglass they should of crucified the artist!! ;D

I'm inclined to agree...it's one of the tragic ironies of my job. I sometimes think I'd have made a happier acoustician than a tech. To me, non-electrical acoustic enhancement is just magical. And it's amazing what they did in the old days w/o any theory or instruments, compared to the lousy sound I've heard after days of someone fiddling with an expensive system. ::)
But it's my job, so I try to grin and bear it.
This system is not so much for the organ as it is for voice, although that, too, really isn't necessary. I am confident that my old friend Bruce (an ex-coworker who is now a consulting engineer for another firm) will set things up so it sounds "better" without being obvious. Ther'll also be a hearing-assist system with headsets for the old-timers in the back...
(-"What'd he say?"
-"He said 'Amen'!")  ;D
The only really useful purpose for the mics, cameras, etc. is so that they can make very nice recordings of ceremonies: baptisms, weddings, holiday services, concerts, etc. It's going to be a very good tool for that stuff.
I forgot to mention that in addition to the carillon in the tower, there is an electrical sytem that allows the organist to trigger chimes in the tower... a nice touch.
Can't wait to hear that organ... :)

The crumbly stuff seen there is non-structural, I think... some of that foundation work might be from an older version of the church (more than one has stood there). It's a pretty solid building.

I believe he was burned at the stake... ;D

P.S. I have a number of 1980's Yamaha DX programmable synthesizers as well as the new 2005 Korg CX-2/BX-3 Combo organ in my photo.

Korg designed this organ to sound exactly the same as Classic Hammond B-3 drawbar organ, complete with Leslie speaker....Procol Harum...Whiter shade of Pale!

"Stake"... "steak"... I get it (and wish i didn't... ::) )
The church organist was there today for a little practice... the old girl sounded pretty good, but a few trumpets  were a little out of tune (hope the electricians weren't bumping into things up in the gallery while running our cables...  :-X)
Really phenomenal bass from that thing- very nice.
I requested the opening of Bach's T and F, and he was happy to oblige- I love that big dissonant chord, especially on a real live wheezy old pipe organ!   Mwahahahah...
