Revisiting the history of this place: I said 17th century, but that's not quite right. The original church was built in the mid-1600s, but there have been four incarnations of it since, due to fire, etc., and at one point the church moved across the street...
The present church is from the early 1800s, stands on the original spot, and the clock tower was erected in the mid-1900s, built out of rubble from the original 17th-century church. Don't hink I've ever seen a steeple that was stone all the way to the top; interesting (and well-done!). Everything inside is a mixed bag, dating from the original time to the present.
A detail of the nicely-carved marble altarpiece, which was at one point painted (Noooo!!! Whyyyy?!). The cost of removing the paint is too prohibitive, so it stays ugly. Saw an old photo of this in all its original grey-veined glory; painting it was a sin, IMHO. The artisan(s) who carved this must be spinning in their graves...
Right... I was supposed to be working today... I'm supervising the cable pull, so I didn't have much to do. Here's the first pull, from the control room to the altar, with the various cables set up on the cart, labelled, etc. Unfortunately, between the two of us, the foreman and I managed to forget a few cables (it's a confusing layout... and I'm an idiot...)
No big, as we have more to pull that way anyhow... ;D
This run has to be pulled in the crawlspace below the church- when I went down there for a look I saw evidence of the old microphone runs. Great day in the morning...! It all works OK, but what a "ham-and-egger" job...
So the cable passes through a hole in the floor of the control room (a closet), and is dragged all the way under the church to pop out of various holes the EC has drilled. Took a while to figure out where they'd pop out when they drilled, but all is ready before lunch. And everybody's dirty except me... heehee. This is from under the altar, looking back.
Here's a look from under the control room (I didn't crawl in there- just stuck the camera in upside-down). That's Chris, the one-man church tech crew, way back there (used the zoom here; it's a long way back there). He happily crawled around in the fith and rubble to assist. Mad dogs and Englishmen, etc.!!
